    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 gs850g brake troubles

ok, so i got some new rubber yesterday and wanted to get them on. i got the front tire on the rim, but now i can not get the wheel back on the bike without the brake caliper bracket rubbing the disk
is there a washer or something that i did not see and dropped, or am i just doing something stupid?
nothing should be bent as it all came off quite easy and the disk was not removed ... the wheel is on the correct way, and the axle was not removed and the side i did not take off is still just fine
do i need to tighten the axle all the way down, then tighten it to the forks?
 
I'm sure others will have a better/more specific answer, but note the location of the different spacers. It's been a little while since I had my front wheel apart, but I remember having a tough time getting it centered right until I realized the spacers had a specific orientation (and I kept getting my left/right confused between the picture and my bike). Once I got that figured out there's been no issue removing and reinstalling my front wheel or calipers.

it was just me being stupid ... spacers in the correct sides, and correct spots ... one backwards :stupid:
 
ssooo, got both tires on, but broke the h-pipe ... you would think that this bike would like a little love, but she is fighting me all the way :(
 
Broke it or was it rotted out to begin with? Replace it with two pieces of straight pipe and heat resistant packing if you can't save the original packing.
 
Two pieces of 1 1/2" pipe 7" long. Expand one end a bit so it can slide over another section of same-size pipe. Cut slots in the expanded end so you can clamp it.

It was so rusted out that it broke off in the end of the other pipe. I thought about straight pipes and was afraid it needed the h-pipe to let a little go out each side to stop back pressure.
 
Thank you man, i will be riding her again soon. The rubber for the airbox seems ready, and i will pull the carbs back off for a final cleaning and float set now that i have my compressor up and running again. Then i will sync the carbs and be ready for a ride.

I only have an old stick welder, and i am not that good with it.
 
So, if anyone is around, some things have changed. I have not been riding the GS (only to get it to my new house) and now have a good place to work on. Pulled the carbs apart toady, and i can not seem to get the idle mixture screws out of the center carbs. Are they fakes, they look the wrong color for real ones. Started to take a few more things off, but it was getting late...
Here is the update. Got the carbs cleaned, the tires both on and the back one seated, new front master cylinder on, and started to take some of the paint off. It is going to be stripped and everything on it gone over. I still need a few parts, so it is not looking to good for this season either, but i hope to get them all over the winter.
It no longer has to live outside, as my new house has a garage, and a paint booth. I also now have a new 170 amp mig that will help things along, too. It is looking up for her, but still has a little time left to sleep ... maybe next season.

It's not just our state...those cross over sections take a faster beating being unplated. Those are primarily for low to mid range torque like any other brand. You could make up a simple H pipe to cross over with, but I don't think you'll loose too much if you don't....early hondas and some kawis ran 4-4 exhaust.
I just went to a s/s 4-1 for my 1000g...I had to because the PO sawed off the mufflers too far forward, but at least now I don't have to worry so much about rust.
 
This is how it sits right now. Wish i had the money for a nice set of pipes, but i will clean the back, and wrap the front.
I work 6 days a week, so going to take some time.

Looks good...except for those bars. :cool:
Another idea would be to clean and paint the mufflers high temp black. Replace it all at a later date when the money is better. HD mufflers are an add on item if you cut the current system off just right...a few here have done that if the mufflers were too rusty for repair.
There's other sources too for clip on mufflers that use the existing pipes...options are a wonderful thing.
