A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Some things I've noticed while riding after the carb tune up (that is still in progress) I rarely turn my wrist more than 1/4 a turn on the throttle...even starting after an intersection. I had to be on a 80 mph freeway to open the throttle even 3/4 full.. Maybe I'm a pansy but I don't feel the need to dart about with a wide open throttle or revving the bike to make noise. I enjoy cruising at 40-60 mph.. and while cruising at 60 my throttle is only about 1/2 open.... SO... I've come to the conclusion the most of my problems are in the slow circuit... I will do some more work to diagnose performance..

Interesting discovery while I've been playing with the mixture screws... I found a frayed wire on the 12 volt wires leading to my coils that may have been causing intermittent firing of #1 and #4... So, I have replaced the connectors with my infamous waterproof marine connectors.. which I'm getting MUCH better at installing correctly the first time... (grin)

Coming up on 10 months since the last installment here. Some health problems slowed me down along with some electrical problems that I couldn't solve. Turned out that I had some faulty connections that were shorting out the trigger wires to the coils... Replaced coils, replaced wires, rechecked all connections and went for a ride today... Seems everything is working. Yay. I was going to document a lot more than I ended up taking pictures of. But I have learned a bunch about my troubleshooting skills. But a good ride (first in a long time) was fun....

sigh. Finally got over 38mpg ...but while riding home after 200 miles it started coughing and sputtering... limped home and it's only firing on 3 cyl. did the old take of each spark plug check, and the one that's missing is #1. Checked compression 122 PSI (within 5 PSI of the other 3) spark plug is wet but is sparking.... ... sigh

Has anyone every had a sparkplug break/quit working in mid ride? Swapped out the #1 plug with a cleaned used one I had around and everything is great. Finally getting about 42mpg on my ride today.. First time it's been that good in 8 years. Thanks for everyone's help on this.

If it happens again on that cylinder, replace the spark plug cap (assuming you haven't done that recently). I've never had a plug fail, but caps have crapped out on me a couple of times.

New caps last year.. saved the old ones and tested their continuity and resistance and they are all fine.. It's probably more of a valve problem. Compression is near the lowest passable on 1 and 4 cyls and valve seats probably need to be addressed on a 40 year old engine... so there's that too.
