    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1981 GS1000g Engine Rebuild

Just starting to rebuild my engine after having it Hydroblasted (looks great). However my son is insisting that I have new bearing replaced on the crank shaft, yet the blokes at VJMC say they wouldn't bother because its bulletproof.

Don't want to spend all this time rebuilding only to have to replace them later.

Any suggestions

If it had a forged crank with plain bearings, it would be a sound idea, but it ain't...
The crank on the GS1000 is well engineered with roller and ball bearings and short of running the motor with no oil is pretty much indestructible. Because it's a pressed up affair, replacing the bearings would involve a lot of work pulling it apart, pressing it back together, balancing etc.
It'll be fine.
 
I agree with GUY. The roller cranks are absolutely bullet proof. Unless there is a known problem with the crank then leave it alone and it will serve you well.
 
Why would you rebuild the motor in the 1st place?

It should go 150,000km on just maintenance and a valve stem seal change

I've even run my 78 about 8 miles without any oil in it all . It's still fine 40,000 miles later, no crank damage

Hi Mr. RoyHamer,

How many miles on the engine? Yes, a top end refresh should be all you need, if that. As long as you're there, new base gasket and O-rings, new head gasket, maybe new rings, hone the cylinders, new valve seals, maybe new cam chain guides, etc. I like Real Gaskets for the valve cover and breather. Below you will find other information about cleaning the carbs, checking the charging system, and other things that should be checked.

Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and let you in on some GS lovin'. :D
