    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1981 GS1000GL master cylinder piston removal

I got the boot off and the circlip out and the piston won't budge. It moves freely in the cylinder and when I push it in and the spring pushes it back out it feels exactly the same as if the clip was still in there when it springs back into place. It hits with a solid thud when it springs all the way back out. I tried pulling it and prying it gently. I also tried shooting air through it and it won't budge.

I did the exact same thing with the master cylinder off of my 1000G and the piston came right out after the clip was removed but this one is obviously a little different.

What am I missing?
 
This happened on mine. It's just some crud blocking it at the end of travel. I just depressed the piston in all the way and quickly released, letting it thunk against the crud a few times. It will eventually spring out, so be ready. Clean out the bore so that it's perfectly smooth before reassembly.

Tried that a few times, guess I need to keep going. I was trying to avoid spraying PB blaster or degreaser in there in case I need to reuse the internals for the time being but if I can't get it out I will try to break up the crud chemically. As long as that's all it is it has to come out eventually.

Got it out. Soaked it in degreaser for awhile then I was able to go back in with a screwdriver to pop it out using the bolt for the handle as leverage. Didn't take much once the degreaser had lubricated the crusty washer. There was a big glob of old brake fluid with what looked and felt like chips of rust. No wonder it was sticking.
