A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi All, new to the forum with a new (old) bike. I have a 1981 GS550 E(x, I think) in need of a new clutch cable. The local spares place has the cable for the 1980 GS550E. Could someone tell me if this part would be suitable or point me in the direction of a resource to check these things? I've had a look at some on ebay to see if they are interchangable and have had mixed results.

Cheers

Go to an online Suzuki place, like Boulevard Suzuki or one of the others. Look up the part number for the 1980, then look it up for the 1981. It's probably the same unless they changed handlebars or something.

Thanks for your help.

Strangely, my bike isn't listed on the sites I've looked at. I wonder if it wasn't widely sold (I'm in South Africa). I'll phone the local Suzuki office and see if they can provide any info.

OK, I looked, your bike has the same clutch release parts as the older 550s. This means cable for the 1978 550 will work, but the length may be slightly off if they changed handlebars for your year. If your bars are about the same as the older bikes it will be fine. If you want I can measure the cable length on my 78.

This is the 1978 clutch cable:

58200-47000 CABLE, CLUTCH | B,C&EC,N&EN

I found a picture of your 1981, the bars look identical to what mine came with, the cable should be fine.

My bike actually looks more like this, with a rear cowl over the tail light and lower bars. Here is a pic of my bars. I've removed my cable and measured it, and will compare it to what they have in the shop for the older models. (1175mm outer sleeve + adjustment area against case. ~125mm inner cable, but hard to get too accurate due to break). I'll keep you updated. Once again, thanks for your help :D

I think th one from a 550S is what you want, for that little bit shorter. I think it's a 58200-43400, but not sure. If you get it can you send me the measurements? I need one slightly shorter for the other 550.

Edit, it might be this:

58200-47700

From a 1982 550M Katana

I think I'll just buy one of each and measure them all.
