    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1981 GS750L Fuel Gauge: Reading less than is actually there

Hey folks,

This morning, my fuel gauge indicated I had 1/4 tank left. I pulled into sheets and pumped 1.5 gallons into the tank before it was full. I'm not sure of the exact capacity of this model's tank but it seems like the gauge may be reading less than what is actually there.

Can anyone tell me the exact capacity on this bike? What would cause a low reading on the fuel gauge?
 
No idea what the tank capacity is but I would guess it's between 3.5 and 4.0 gallons. When you hit REServe, you should be adding between 2.5 and 3.0 gallons.

Does your gauge have a red section at the bottom? Mine does, and I like to calibrate the gauge so that it hits REServe about the time the needle moves from the white section to the red.

To calibrate your gauge, you will need to remove the tank (if it's mostly empty, it helps a LOT), then remove the cover over the fuel level sensor. Since yours is reading a bit low, bend the arm DOWN a bit, maybe about 1/2 to 1" and re-install it in the tank. To check your work, put a hose on the petcock and run it to a gas can beside the bike. With the petcock in the RUN position, apply vacuum to the petcock so the fuel flows into the can. When it stops, turn the key ON and look at the gauge, if you haven't had the key ON all the time, so far. You can pull the LIGHTS fuse and turn the kill switch OFF to minimize drain on the battery while doing this.

If you don't like where the gauge is when the fuel stops, turn the petcock to PRIme to finish draining the tank and do it again. Might take two or three tries, but you will be happy with the results.

From what I've found, the lone year '81 750L had a 4.8gal tank with .5gal reserve.
Your best bet is to check the ohms readings when the sender is out of the tank. 0-120 ohms {I think} is near empty{reserve} to full. If it's a stock sender you can, as Steve said, bend the float arm to tweak it in range again and to do that you'd have to remove it anyway.
