    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

"1982 GS 550 Cam Timing "No Start"

How about posting some photos showing the timing, including the 1-4 T mark alignment? Load them on photobucket than link the IMG code here.
 
See this pic- note exhaust cam marks, etc. see how cam lobe on #4 exhaust is pointing forward.Also note #4 intake lobe is facing rear wards. Are yours close to this ?image.jpg
 
Make sure the crank is aligned like this too...


 
Yes my marks are exactly like that. So it seem that my cam timing is perfect.

But the thing still does the same thing. Turns over fine but only pops, it doesn't start.

I checked the plugs and only one of them was actually wet the others are dry, so it seems that I'm not getting fuel to all of my cylinders.

I guess I'll go through the carbs and check the pilot circuits.

It seems like I am 180* off. It backfires once in a while as well. It still pops like its trying to start too

The thing that gets me is on the cam sprockets there are wear marks where it looks like it was bolted but it is spun 180* from there in order to be by the book.

My engine looks just like the pictures that where posted.

Cam lobes by cyl 4 are opposite from each other, the notches point each other. And the 1 arrow is flat with the case with 1-4 T lined up with Mark.
 
Ok so how many links are there supposed to be between the intake and exhaust cams.

In the picture of the cams from tom203 there is 19 links. It's it supposed to be 19 or 20?

Good, but are plug wires on right? Left coil fires 1 and 4, etc. easy to,mix up, so double check.

My shaft 650 is 20 but I thought your 550 is 19 but what does manual say? The pic is of a modified 550 with 650 head.
 
I just checked and yes the plug wires are on right.

The manual says 20 pins. But my 3 arrow is pointing straight up should it be slightly to the right? Would 1 pin stop it from running? The manual I am using shows from 77-82 but it doesn't seem to deal with electronic ignition at all like my bike.

No,one pin off would not stop it from running. Wait for a someone to chime in regarding 550 pin count.
 
What could cause a no start, timing 180* off, low compression, no fuel, spark at the wrong time. Am I missing anything?

I was told by a local bike mechanic to put a few drops of oil directly into the cylinders and see if it would start. I did try it and it still didn't do anymore then pop.

When it pops its sounds like is wants to idle. For a split second it sounds like it is running.
 
Isn't the firing order 1 2 4 3 on these?

Doesn't that mean that for cyl 1 the exhaust valve should open next?

I'm really stumped on this one.

I thought maybe my advance was in wrong and I had to time it to 2-3 instead of 1-4 but it can only be installed one way.


What else can I try/check.

I felt like I was making some improvement tonight. It is still in time, and it still does the same thing while trying to start it, it pops every once in a while like its firing one cylinder.

I noticed that everyonce in awhile when I stop turning it over it keeps running for a second but really low rpms probably around 100.

I tried spraying some carb cleaner in the cylinders but it didn't even pop.

should I try gas instead?

yes, but any chance you got ignitor connections wrong, either from signal coils to ignitor ,or from ignitor to ignition coils? It sounds like it's firing out of sequence. The pin count should be in this PDF file form Basscliff's

I had the bike running with the dyna s before and I never touched it when doing the head. I tried swiping wires as well
 
I forgot you have the dyna ignition! I retread this thread and noticed you had weak spark and lower voltage to ignition coils. Try a temporary jumper wire from battery positive to orange/white wires at coils- this will give full battery voltage to coils and dyna.
 
Today i checked for spark again. And wouldn't you know I only had spark on cylinder 1 and 4. So it seems like one of the modules failed.

I called dynatek and they want me to send the whole unit back so that they can check it over, then they will send me a new one.

'But what could have caused it to blow in the first place?

have you checked each module?
have you swapped the feed wires to see if 2-3 will have spark or not?
the quickest way to pop a module is by it getting voltage to the wrong wire or to high of voltage(like using a running car to jump the bike).
 
No i didn't swap the wires. i had everything hard wires i could try it this weekend but I'm pretty sure its the module. Another thing that I noticed when I took it off the bike is that the 2-3 module was actually cracked, it must have been like that when I got it. I was probably getting an intermittent spark.
