    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

After getting caught in a bad traffic snarl in hot weather my bike overheated and ever since leaks oil badly after it warms up. I had a mechanic look at it and he says I burnt up the sealant between the crankcase halves - quoted me $1200 to fix it, maybe more. It is mostly labor - the sealant is cheap, but who knows what else a person may find once in there that needs repairs.

I really like this old bike but dont want to spend that much money on a $2,000 30 year old bike.

Anyone ever done this repair themselves? Any tips/pointers?
 
First thing to do is pinpoint the source of the leak yourself. I recommend using some engine degreaser to clean the engine really well and then having a close look after you restart the engine to see where the oil is coming from. Leaks from the crankcase halves are rare, most likely the base gasket or head gasket are leaking. Not the simplest of repairs, but better than having to split the crankcases. In either case, not difficult but most people don't have the energy for major engine repairs so you may have to ask yourself the tough question.

C'mon Ed, there's plenty of energy out there. Plenty of people have split cases, even non mechanics. If he LUVS that bike then nothing is too much trouble and he will learn heaps and develop skills he never had before.

Ha ha Don.:evil: Most people around here don't even have the energy to rebuild their carbs correctly no less rebuild an engine. I know YOU have the energy and know how, but you are among the rare few.:p
