A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi, folks -- long time, no post. I couldn't log in to my old account, so I made a new one.

Title really says it all; I have a good lead on a nice 82' 850 tank, but own an 82' 650GL. Will the tank mate up easily enough or will I need to fab up a new tank mount? I'm assuming they take different petcocks too?

Thanks in advance!

It's not a direct swap, but I'm sure it can be adapted. Making it fit the body lines and look right is another matter.

I don't have a 650G handy, but there is one within about 20 miles. My 650L, which uses slightly different mounts, left tonight for its new owner.

If you really need some test fitting, I can take my spare tank down and test it on the 650.

I've got an '82 650GL frame and I have an 82 1100GL tank. If anyone knows if the '82 850GL and 1100GL tanks are the same, I'll try to check it out tomorrow.

BTW you are talking about an 850GL tank right? A regular 850G tank will be a lot bigger and longer and as JJ says it wont look right on an L frame. I only have the 80-81 850/1100G model year tank.

I missed the "L" in the first post.

In that case, NO, the 850G tank will NOT fit on the 650L. Even if you move the mounts forward to the G mounting position, you would still have to change the entire front end (forks and triples) to keep the forks from banging new dents into the tank.

Rick, YES, the 850L and 1100L tanks are the same for '82/'83 models. Well, physically the same, they were painted differently.

I'll double check my serial number, but I'm almost positive it's a GL. It's obviously a G due to the shaft drive, but not positive if it's an L or not because there was a lot of cosmetic work/changes done to it by the PO.

Look for leading axle forks, chrome fenders (front and rear), chrome headlight bucket, stepped seat, shorter mufflers.

Definitely a lead axle fork, and step-down seat. PO painted the headlight and front fender, although rear fender appears to be chromed. Seem to be a normal length, 4 into 2 exhaust, ending just past the rear wheel.

You likely have an L. Try posting a picture here or send one to my email. Info is in my profile, just click on my username.
