A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I am replacing the air filter on my GS850 GLX. The old one was in there for 20 years I think and the foam rubber just fell apart when I removed it. I cleaned out the air box real good but I am having trouble installing the new air cleaner.
It is just real loose in there and I know this is not right. Air would leak around the filter. I see two tabs inside the air box but I am unable engage them in order to get a tight fit from the filter to the airbox. I dont even know if the open part of the filter with the screen should be pointed up or down. Can someone
tell me which way is up and how to get a proper fit for this filter to the airbox. Also are any gaskets required between the filter and the airbox?

Re: 1982 GS850GL Air Filter

Here's a schematic of your airbox/filter from bike bandit. This should help you line things up.

There should be a foam layer between the basket and the air box. It's about 3/8 inch thick. This seals the basket to its mount on the air box. (The hole in the basket faces up.)

The foam can be hard to find. I know that Dennis Kirk sells some sheets that can be cut to fit. I know also that many have used the stick-on door seal stuff sold in hardware stores, myself included. (One of my maintenance projects for this winter is to replace my make-shift seals with the real stuff from Dennis Kirk.)

This definitely needs to be sealed or your bike won't run very well. It will run lean and thus hot and probably won't have much power at high RPMs.

Poor Air Filter Fit

The diagram shows the filter with the screened hole down. You can see it on the left hand side of the diagram above. I do not understand that.
Do you think they made a mistake on the diagram?
did take a lot of extra foam out of that airbox but it just fell apart and
I could not tell there was even a foam gasket in there.
I will order foam material from Dennis Kirk and cut it to fit and see
if that works. Thanks for the help I was really at the end of my diagnostic ability.
