1983 GS 650G Full Size Caf? Project

Been busy on the bike and haven't had much time to update. I am now waiting for parts to arrive as I decided to add some flare to the side of the tank.

I decided I will get rid of the faux knee pads and add real knee pads. I purchased these:

Also will be adding these to the side of the tank, but I don't like the "your Text" and had them change it to cursive Nineteen in black.

Good idea with the knee pads! I just bought some neoprene the other day to attempt to carve my own. Will be interesting to see how they turn out compared to some off the shelf ones, but I haven't really seen any that suit the shape of the 450E/S tank all that well...

Awesome job! Your'e painting is awesome. Good work.
Might need to check over that weld on the seat pan though, lots of gaps! :)

:oWell, they are worse now.:o

I didn't like the lines of the tank so I chopped the braces and re-welded. Not going to post pictures welds since they are so ugly now. The welding burnt the paint and my cheap welder sent slag onto the paint. I had a towel over the paint but slag somehow rolled under it. (Caught the wife's towel on fire too but that’s another story)

So, I stripped the paint down to metal and finished the bondo Friday night. I think I mentally suppressed how much paint/prep work I would need to do cause I got sick to my stomach as the paint started bubbling.

Here is the burn marks and newly created bracket. I also added some metal to the seat pan so the seat cover will be flush with the bottom.

Doing somethings different this time. I don't like the mass produced look of the tank so I added some extra bondo.

Did some side work between fixing the carb issue, rewiring the lighting, welding again, stripping again and bondo. I entered an Unlimited Class Pinewood Derby competition.

The entry, I call it the "Silver Goose"

The paint would be better but it fell off the drying hanger. The results were better than I expected. Out the 30 entries only 8 showed up for the competition. I will post the winning race when I figure out how to get it uploaded, its too big for me to email it to myself.

I like the bondo idea actually, definitely gives the tank that extra unique touch :)

One thing I didn't like about the paint was the sides were kinda boring. I plan on keeping the stripe down the middle of the top of both tank and tail and the numbers. Not repainting the side panels. I came up with some paint schemes. (any photoshop wizards feel free to add designs or correct) I will mostlikely add the race flags and knee pads to the sides. If anyone has suggestions or favorites lets hear it.

Same as before.

My vote goes to with flags.

Nothing else, because I think it puts too much on there.

My votes for spike on both, no flag. I think the flag and the knee pad looks clustered.

Circle w/flags or nothing. Don't spell out the racing number. That number originally is there to quickly ID your bike on track, no one would ever spell it out on a real race bike/car.

Everybody better agree or its staying metal and bondo. ;) I have a favorite but I am going to wait until the flag and pads get here and do some mock ups. I can say I love the color of gold on the bike. Hmmm, maybe all gold with flags and pads?

The side graphic and knee pads arrived before last Friday and so the painting began. I did get a good laugh off the graphics I bought off of Ebay. I asked for Nineteen spelled out above the flags, and this is what I got.

Buwhahahaha

I tried making templates for the sides and tops for the new paint scheme but it wasn?t going to work. I tried my hand at free handing it and I must say it worked out easier than I thought it would.

The finished product is in bins and I don't have any pics yet. They turned out better then I expected!

Hahahahahahaahahahahaha mate that's pure gold right there!

The paint should look great, I'm about to tackle my own paint next week so interesting to see how you've done your masking there too. Good stuff :)

Those badges are great. I love a little comedy in a bike build.

The wife and I are still laughing about the decal. One good thing about it is that I was going to put the decal under the clear but cutting the Nineteen and putting it over the flags just looked funny, wrong arc. She pointed out if I put it on the outside of the paint I can change it later if I get sick of it, smart lady.

The I talked to the ebayer and he is a good chap and is going to send another decal with just nineteen above the flags. So, here are the possible results of my request of just nineteen above the flags:

Just Nineteen
Just 19
Just Nineteen Spelled out
Nineteen
?Nineteen?

I am hoping for the last two.

I vote quotation marks, because again, racing numbers are never spelled out, however racing vehicles often have names. Yours can be named "nineteen".

Did a little research on 1960's race numbers and found nothing definitive that I could find about having them written out. However, the numbers were hand painted mostly at that time of the race and I doubt anyone would write out a race number. So, Curly, you gave me something to think about.

That being said, this is a 1980's bike pretending it is a 1960's bike. I will probably never race the bike. Ok maybe on a race day if they had one around here. So, since this bike is for looks, I will see how "Just Nineteen" looks and go from there.

It is complete!

It is complete!

Finally after over a year of work, it is done! Whew, YES! WOOT! Merry Christmas! :dancing:
