1983 GS1100ED Refurb turned Restore ???

Thanks for the information on the front suspension, posplayer. Might be good to know should I ever need to change mine. I'm right between you and Chef at 6'3" and 250lbs...so that might be pretty close to what I'd need.

The new pics better show the rack. That looks really nice for luggage. I'm thinking of designing a bracket for a backrest on mine since I can't find one I like that would work with my bike (form and function). Eventually, my wife will ride with me, too, so I want something back there for her. I've got some good friends in my Jeep club that can help me fabricate something.

Great pics! Makes me wish I could ride right now.

The headers...

The headers...

I think the headers should be get a ceramic coating or something... Or somehow get them to closer match the color of the frame of your bike... Just my opinion...

Just saw this thread and great job. Really impressive.

Please let me know if you come up with a back rest idea - my girlfriend also would ride more if I had one.

ED Update
Bill and I worked most of the weekend to get the GS1100ED back in one piece. This top end rebuild includes the following:

1.) low mileage head, with GS1150 28mm intake valves, radius cut valve job , back cut valves. with very nice street port from Terry headsbikesmopars. Flow on the head went form 78 to 97 cfm at 0.400" (If I remember right)

2.) 1168 Weisco Kit

3.) New 0.340 Web cams (Yes another set; the first set were sacrificed to the GS charging gods)

3.) Bumped up the mains from 138 to 145 (tentative)

4.) Combo Coil Modification combined with Dyna S.

Had alot of problems with the MLS (Multi Layer Steel) gasket which is a modern gasket. It has a 0.001" layer of rubber to provide a seal against liquids. Don't use Brake cleaner to clean it ; ask me how I know :(.

Bill volunteered to ride to APE in Willow spring Monday Morning and to buy a head gasket come back and replace it while I was working; O could not have him ride 5 hours and then put another 5 into getting the bike running.

Well after exploring different options including ordering $200 worth of 1150 gaskets, Bill and I were talking last night at about 10:40 pm. Turns out I already had the composite Cometic gasket eh was going to drive 5 hrs for already in the garage. It is a gasket the PO had bought to swap out and I had always assumed it was OEM size. Turns out it is the same size as used to be provided with the Weisco 1166 kit. It actually had a larger bore than the MLS.

Long story short, I Copper coated both sides of the head gasket put it in place and proceeded to re assemble. It as 1:00 am when I was done. I kicked it over for 3 sec , drake a couple of beers and went to bed.

Started it up this morning and NO LEAKS and NO SMOKE and SOUND GREAT.

Will do a little break in after lunch hour traffic subsides and I get some work work done. Will put about 100 miles on it today and re-torque tomorrow to be ready to leave Thurs morning ;).

Great rebuild post. Except the few times I have stumbled upon it, I get sucked into reading the whole dayum thing!

Thanks for the video! I've always really dug your yosh decals. really nice touch on the cover.

Here is what the bike looked like on a test ride prior to the 300 mile retorque on the head bolts.

Jim

Hats off Jim! that thing looks fantastic!!

I can really appreciate the attention to detail, the plug wires, top end cooler, frame color, the Ohlins, painted triples, the decals it all works well. Very tastefully done.

Thanks Guys

Thanks Guys

Just thought I would do an update based on the engine update. I still have to post a review of Terry's head; this thing is much faster but very street able. In other words it acts like stock till you roll on the throttle, then you can really tell the difference. It is hard to see from the pics but 1168 cc is there. I still need to raise the needles a notch, but it is mean as it needs to be for now going to red line.

If I get bored then the slingshots go on.

Joe,
Thanks as well, yea I have probably spent about the same amount of time as you on little details. Hell it is almost as fun working on them as ridding  We are in Mid April and the school semester has about 1 more month; after that I will get to the gixxer suspension.

Jim

All I can say is that is one awesome machine !!!!!!!! I want one when I grow up !!! Cheers

Joe,
Whoops thought you wanted to see the timing cover? That is Por-15 Black engine paint; very nice. I used 1000 grit to do the final polish on the Yoshi logo.

picture.php

Oh the header paint; whatever u do don't use Por-15 high heat paint. Maybe if you can perform a miracle experiment in outer space for it to work, but it repeatedly bubbled and flacked.

This Zynolyte worked well, covers and there is not a hint of bubbling or chipping.

Rick,
Thanks for the comments; I'm not sure if I'm growing up or going back wards.

Jim

Outstanding. I can't wait til my ride is ridable again. Gettin there. I have two questions relating to your bikes Jim:

What do you do on long trips if you have to adjust the chain without having a center stand? I just got a Yosh pipe and didn't realize the stand had to go.

Also, what is the guage and light setup on your GSXR? What headlamp ears are you using and is that just the stock cluster that's usually under the fairing? Thanks and beautiful job. You're bikes must be fun!

JOsh

I saw this bike in action up close today....it's an absolute rocket!

Thanks guys

Thanks guys

Red,
Thanks it has been alot of work, I feel like I have squeezed about 20 years of motorcycle wrenching into the last year and 1/2.

Josh,
The GSXR already has a 17" wheel and USD fork conversion with 89 guages(I think 750's as the redline is 12K). I picked up another set of guages from a 91 1100 that has a nice cast/machined frame for the guages. It is the last set before the water cooled GSXR added the 3rd water guage.

I will start another thread on the GSXR1100G after I finish the Wheel conversion on the ED, but I was able to modify stock headlamp ears by sectioning in . This allows me to keep stock turn signals. More later on that; the ED has taken presidence for the moment.

Curseboy,
The jetting is very close, it seems to bobble a little but clears on a fast opening only sometimes. Generally when I drop the hammer from 5K+ it just goes. I used to have to kick it down to 3rd to get the 1075 to growl, kickin the 1168 down to 4th U gotta hold on. Going 0.348's and RS flatslides must be ridiculous (I have 0.340's and 36mm CV's). Once I get used to this I will go 1/4 throttle mod and the slingshot carbies  . Of course will need the gixxer wheels and the bullet fairing at there is aot of buffeting as 3rd nears redline (where ever mph that is:D ).

bike on the ground.

Ray is that a frame ground or a battery ground ^o??

Top End Rebuild Update

Top End Rebuild Update

I recently completed a 1168cc rebuild with a whole bunch of help from Chef (Bill).

Besides the Wiesco kit, I had a head ported by Terry of Terry at headsbikesmopars
here is a link top a description of the head.

http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showpost.php?p=999223&postcount=29

Basically did the following:

1168 cc Weisco
Ported head, 1150 intake valves, back cut and ported.
Milled the head
Reinstalled the APE springs
New Webcams 0.340 cam set to 105/107 degrees (using a high performance combo gasket scraper, degree pointer)
Dyna -S
Mains on DJ Stage 3 bumped from 137.5 to 145
That is the high lights at least;
Now for some pics.

Head got repainted with that really cool Por-15 Black engine paint. It doesnt look OEM but it does look WET.

Here is the 9" degree wheel installed on the ignition side. Combo gasket scraper and ice scraper is used for indicator pointer to +/-0.25 degrees accuracy

After this engine was all together, Head n torqued, cams installed , degreed we had to go back and install this . The gasket that saved the day. Bill was going to drive 5 hours to get one of these and then reassemble my bike. I told him no and then I found this one later that night. He was going to do it knowing he had to work two 12 hour back to back days starting the following day. I don't know if he is crazy or just a good friend. Thanks Bill.

Here is what it sounded like the first time it was started. Notice the oil leak that started soon after.

Anyway, after fining out this is the right gasket. I went into the garage at 10:45 and put the head, installed the cams and had the engine ready to fire by by 1:00 am. I started the bike up the next morning at 8:00 am.

I can't stand unfinished business!

Hey Bill,

I have some unfinished business, maybe after your two 12 hour shifts you could road trip to San Antonio and rebuild my 1100...hotdogs and beer on me...:D

Fantastic job BTW to both of you!
