DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. Hi All. I have not logged in in a long time so my account was deleted so I look new but have been around for a few years. My problem is I checked the Regulator/Rectifier and the Stator and they are reading good but my bike is not charging?? This is very strange? I am using a multi meter and the have checked continuity to each piece and that shows good. What would you guys recommend I start with as far as replacing. Is the regulator more likely to go out or the Stator?

If it is still the stock-style regulator, it is quite likely to take out the stator. We have found a newer regulator that works much better.

You may have to change the stator, but check it before you start throwing money at it. Hopefully you have a service manual and a multimeter. With those two items, we can guide you through the diagnosis procedure.

If you DO have to change the stator, it would be wise to upgrade to the newer regulator to prevent damage to the new stator.

.

Great advice. Where can I find a manual and the new regulator??

I sold these bikes at a local bike shop when I was in my 20s. My avitar is the bike. I looked for a long time for one to come up for sale! Got the manual and will look through it tonight. Thank you John

You say you have checked the R/R and stator.... Did you conduct the quick charge test ? Reading key off... Reading key on..... Reading at idle.....Reading at 3000 rpm.....Reading at 5000 rpm...... ?

After testing the regulator as the manual shows, the ohms read 3.1 or so on the multi meter and the manual calls for 6.5/7.0 ohms with one test reading 3.1 and it calls for 50/70? All the tests that call for (no reading or OFF) are not showing any resistance as it should be. Going by the manual it is bad?

Can the manual be reversed because of I do the test as it shows in the graph it has no resistance when it should and has resistance when it should not. If I do the series20190907_200827.jpg of tests flipping the plug over the "off" positions are corect and I pick up ohms as it shows in the graph only lower than specs listed. The graph seams reversed with "a" actually being "e" and so on?? That is hard to follow I know.

The problem with the tests that you are doing is that you are only checking the rectifier side of the package. The regulator is also in the same device, and there is no way to check it without running the engine and getting some numbers.

Please do what we call the "Quick Check" of your charging system.
1. Start with a fully-charged battery. If it has been on the charger within the last 24 hours, you might get a false high-voltage reading. A fully-charged wet-cell battery will show 12.6 volts, a fully-charged AGM (that is a construction style, not a brand name) battery will show 12.8 volts.
2. All voltage readings should be taken at the battery terminals.
3. Key OFF.
4. Key ON, engine not running, wait 30 seconds.
5. Key ON, while pressing starter button.
6. Engine running at idle. (Will probably rise a bit right after starting.)
7. Engine running at 2500 RPM.
8. Engine running at 5000 RPM.
9. Key OFF.

Report those numbers, we'll try to direct you.

Good football morning!20190908_090609.jpgHere are the readings. I had it on the battery tender all night. I turned on the ignition switch to drain off just a bit before I started.

Will do now and post results. Here is a pic of the surgery and football. My favorite time of year!!!20190908_101255.jpg

Here are the results. the negitive lead voltage drop reading was .30v and the max allowable was.25v so I ran a new wire from the neg wire on the r/r to the neg post on the battery. I thought I had it fixed and the voltage did go up at 2500rpm to 13.25 form 12.40 but just shy of where it should be 13.50v but @5000rpm it is only reading 13.12v not close to 14.0/15.50v. Now what do I do from here?20190908_111517.jpg

Hi...I owned the exact same bike at age 18...bought it brand new. I'm looking for one...perhaps you know of another one for sale during your search for this one? Sorry to hijack your thread...cheers
