I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1983 Pipes on a 80/81 GS550

I was under the impresion you had a 550E, these pipes are for a 550L.

The header part will fit, maybe even the rear mounts, but they are a lot shorter mufflers.

I have a mutt!

I have a mutt!

The motor is a 550E, the frame will be a 550L the swing arm and forks are 550E
I'm not worried about fabbing brackets...just want to know if the headers will clear the front wishbone part of the frame...as well as match up with the cylinders-

Those pipes are from a second generation 550, which uses a completely different engine and frame from the early bikes. Not sure if this is important or not but it bears mentioning.

Back when I first bought my ’79 550E I mounted up some ’80 550L pipes, which fit after slotting the rear mount hole. I also had some ’81 550T pipes but they would not fit on the ’79 without cutting the rear muffler hanger loops off the frame, which I wasn’t about to do. Bottom line is that these details matter and it may not be as simple as just fabbing up a bracket strap or some sort.

Those pipes are from a GS550L, not the later 16V ES or EF
I wasn't aware the 550L had the later 16V 572cc motor...
In fact, they made the 550L up to 1986 with the 8V 549cc. those pipes being 83, would fit an earlier L model no problem.

As I said, all 549cc headers are the same.. the E models are the same up to 1980 when they added a balance pipe.

The E and L mufflers are different, main one being length, the other being the mounting bracket... underneath on the E, on top for the L..

Detail are important

Detail are important

Yeah I figured that was the year of the motor change...so the distance between heads, as well as exhaust head dia. could be different

Just had a look on Zedder... seems they did do a 16V 572cc model in 1983.. but still made the 8V up to 86..

the 16V is listed as GSX550LD those pipes on Ebay state GS550 GS550L

I think it would be hard to tell which ones they are..

Thanks!

Thanks!

I'll email the seller to see If I can get some more info-
Best bet would be pipes for my 1980 550 motor-the search continues...its alright though since I'm still trying to find funds for the purchase of whatever pipes I do find-
going to put my 450 dual carbs up on ebay tomorrow to see if they can bring in some cashola-

Here in the US, where those pipes are coming from, the 8V 550 was not sold after '82. I'm almost positive those ebay pipes are 16V type.
