A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've got a 81 gs 1000 and i have a v+h 4 into 1 pipe and a kn filter. I just got done doing a top end rebuild and a carb rebuild. Pull the plugs and they are black. I would have thought it would have been lean, real lean.
Any ideas?
ALso, the small screws on each carb, on the part of the carb thats going into the engine( they are sunk into the carbs) how do you set them? I did all the way to seat, and then backed it off 1 1/2 turns.
thanks for the help
tom

1.5 turns is probably not enough. All this "turns" business really confuses me - just one of my bugaboos - so let's talk about degrees. If 1.5 turns = 270 degrees, it's definitely not enough. If it's 540 degrees, that's a bit on the rich side.

Also, are you pulling the plugs after the bike was pulled into the driveway, or are you doing a plug "chop?" That is, find a long straight road, ride the bike where you feel problems, and hit the kill switch and clutch at the same time. Coast to side of road, then read the plugs.

Anyway, both through my own experience and what I've read from the experts on here, 2 turns (720 degrees) is about in the middle most of the time.

normal driving mixture can be somewhat controlled by placing washers on the needle mounting assembly to push them down. Have you donan all out running test to see the plug color after an1/4 mile full bore run??
TRY SUPPLYING US WITH MORE INFO PLEASE :D

i usually check the plugs after two or three days of driving. Normal driving condtions with the occasional rip on the throttle.
thanks for the replies

Check the float levels, that can cause some richness. After the carb rebuild, did you have the crabs resync?

I would also resync your crabs. Crabs are very unpredictable, i had them once! LOL just kidding, man. Couldnt resist.
