    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

#4 Plug fouling again, need advice

'82 GS1000 Kat, pods, MTC open headers, Dyna coils.

Hey guys, I noticed #4 exhaust wasn't getting as hot as the others. I pulled the plug (OEM plug), re-gapped and grounded it, no spark.

I put on a new (OEM) one and got a fat blue spark. This is the second plug that's gotten fouled recently and in the same cyl. the others are burning nicely. This cylinder has decent compression but uses some oil, which is the source of the fouling.

How can I keep this from happening? Should I lean out the carb a little? How about a hotter plug?

Any advice helps.

My first reaction is to suspect electrical components. The voltage going to the coil, the plug wire and the plug boot.
You could switch the plug wires from the same coil to verify whether the problem is electrical, Well, almost because with aging wiring you often get intermittent problems. But if you could verify that the problem is with the electrics that would save fiddling with the carbs.

Likely NOT the coil. They control TWO cylinders. If one is bad, another will be. Just a rule of thumb. They dont HALF work. Check your plug wires and caps. But you say you are oil fouling, so i suspect THIS is indeed the problem. The only thing you can really do, aside from pulling the head and changing your valve seals, and possibly finding a ring issue as well, (but i suspect its simply a valve seal) is try to use a hotter plug. Im not sure leaning out the cylinder is a great idea, but others may say its ok to do. Bottom line, and i hate to say it at the start of the riding season, but i think you'd be BEST served to do a seal job on the head.
 
thank you, but the electrical is good. all new dyna coils and wires, plugs. the coils have a relay mod and have excellent voltage. with a new plug it fires great for a week or two.

the carbs are all good as well.

valves adjusted recently.

it's the oil coming into the cylinder causing the fouling of the plug. it's not quite enough to see smoke out of the exhaust though.

what i need to know is, what can i do to overcome plug fouling? a hotter plug seems like the answer, but i hope someone here has had this problem.

Cafe, I just got your message and thank you. The cyl did have a stuck ring when i first bought her, she sat for a long time. the ring is good now but i suspect it left a mark on the cyl wall.

I'm gonna lean her out a half turn and plug chop, but i'll also go to the shop and get a hotter plug if i need to.

How many miles on it since you got it going? Maybe you need more time to seat the rings again.
I chased an oil problem for a year. Changed the valve stem seals and even got a new head with new guides. I needed new rings and a fresh hone. Problem solved.
 
Yes, I polish chrome and magnesium parts as well as aluminum, stainless, and brass. What do you have in mind, and in what condition?
