A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What are the benefits or any negatives with converting from a 630 to 530 chain and sprockets?

Well, once my kit gets installed, I'll give actual feel. As for benefits...weight reduction is one. Got mine from Z1.

pay attention to "sprocket size"... different from "how many teeth".
check many posts like Agemax says.
I didn't....
Changed my 79 1000L from 630 to 530... chain rubbed on swing arm.. had to buy sprockets twice.
When I got it right, I realized I like the "old school" look better.. and wanted the 630 back.

A modern 530 is probably stronger than a vintage 630.

In a nutshell, there are no downsides, other than you need new sprockets. (Which you would need anyway if your 630 chain is worn.)

Wow....all this talk about 530 conversion. If ONE talks to the folks at Z1, there would be no issues with fit test. I'm just sayin'. And I remember being mentioned about tooth count....it depends on how you ride.

Would you rather a tire or sparkplug thread? :)

Finally!

I'm not much for debate...but you're messin' with me! (In a good way)

I just wish I could have completed the task back in NM. That darn front sprocket just wouldn't budge. No impact gun meant I was stuck with it but got MrBill's old 630 chain...which I still have.

I also talked to Rob from Z1 who was very helpful in this regard as well as the purchase of my V&H/4-1 Exhaust. Those were exciting times when I made all those purchases. Now I have different priorities.

Good chat!

When I was road racing in a production class(1982!), I ran a 530 chain kit and people thought I was cheating. I have a used 630 set-up that is in very good condition. 15/42. Will need a master link. It came off of a GS1100E. Will trade for most anything off of a GS1000ec or GS1100ez plus postage. I went with a 530. If you are looking to lighten things up, the chains from Z1 are very heavy duty, but a little heavy in weight compared to others. Z1 chains are also way less $$$

Thanks for the replies gentlemen.

Now....how do I go about getting the correct information on what size 530 to replace the 630 sprockets?

Thanks again.

Seems a local parts supplier has all the info I need for the stock gearing, would have to do some calcs if I wanted to play with different ratios.

Will keep the spacer in mind! Thanks

If you go to the website given multiple times there is a chart that has already done the work for you

Thanks Chuck.

With Shipping being so expensive to RSA I hardly looked through the Z1 site as I prefer to source what is locally available.

That's what I figured. I'm certain you can find what you need there, but if we can help get rid of some of the guesswork, we're more than willing.
