    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

is the 81 gs550 engine the same as the 80 gs550 engine? or is there two different engines for both 1980 and 1981? i have a 1980 gs550e and ordered a ss bolt set. what they sent is totaly wrong.
 
Pretty sure the 80 and 81 engines are the same. The early engine is similar too but has a kick starter, points, and a small port head since it uses VM carbs.

where did you get the bolt set from? did you order the right one?

Ness is right they are the same motor they changed in 83-86
 
I had the same problem with my 80 gs550. I ordered a set from stainlesscycles.com When it came all the bolts were too short. I called them and they asked how many bolts I had on the signal generator cover. I told them three and they said I had an 81 engine. They sent me out a new set that day and they fit perfectly. If that's who you ordered from give them a call they will take care of you.
 
stainlesscycle.com. they are on ebay. 24.99 plus ship 6.95. im sure a simple mistake. ill let you know.
 
Gregg at stainless was great. my fault. the frame has been painted, and the vin tag is useless. my title says 1980. previus owner told me it is an 80. im sure the vin tag said the bike was produced in late 1980. which means its an 81.thanks to all for the help.
