    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

650 engine high pitched

hi,
i bought a 81 gs 650GL last year in fall as a project bike that wouldn't start for $300, i ride a TL1000R and a 929, so this is a big change of pace for me, i was tempted into the project because i got an 83 gs450 for my girlfriend, and loved working on it and riding it :D.

after replacing the RR and the battery, rebuilding the brakes, and rebuilding the carbs (once before i came to this forum, and then when i found the correct way to do it on here, i cleaned and rebuilt them properly).

anyway, i finally got the title and such changed over and have been ridding it on the street a couple times, and it seems pretty solid, but i noticed there is a high pitched squeal the is coming from the engine. its not loud at all, but i can hear it. i am only saying from the engine because it goes away if i coast, and speeds up if i raise my RPM. also, its there if i have it in neutral, and rev the engine.

the only thing i didn't do with the carbs is a proper sync, i only bench sycn'd them. i don't think that is causing this though,

i was reading it could be a gasket, like the exhaust gasket maybe? Does that sound correct, or what else could this be?
 
Cam journals, is a possibility but if,it is a 'whirring' sound ( no better way I can describe it )' it is likely just the noise the 650 makes. I was a bit concerned when I first got mine but after several years, later... I've determined that is just the sound the 650 makes. ;)

When you had those carbs off, did you check camchain tensioner to make sure it was not froze up from sitting or incorrectly adjusted ? I'll assume you adjusted valves. Even with my poor hearing , I do hear an odd "whirring" sound- but after living with dirt bikes, I felt it was normal- so far so good!
 
Eric suggests you lube your tach drive gears. Which makes sense if you think about it. Try that as it is alot easier to check, I would also lube the speedo and both cables while your at it. If that doesn't do it atleast you eliminted one possibility.
 
+1 to What GS Rick says...

Wingsconsin posted a video of his 650GL, and it has a distinct whirring sound too. You should have a listen to see if it is similar.
