    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

650E model vs 650G model --- Whats compatable?

I just realized I haven't signed on in here for years! Time flies...

I have an 81' 650E chain drive model that I bought last year as a project. Someone has offered me a an 81' GS650G ( shaft) bike for free that has been in the back of a garage since 1990. No title and its 171 miles one way to get it, the kicker is its FREE! Only thing is I have to move a pair of Chevy Chevettes and a bunch of assorted hoard to get to it. Not sure its worth it or not. I know the bikes are similar but is it worth the effort to retrieve?

Are exhaust, carbs, wiring the same? I think the engines are different...maybe. Should I go get this?
 
The bottom end is different. Top end should be the same except for the cams might have a different profile. If you need parts for your bike grab it.
 
Weither E or G or L (GL) the major engoine and wiring is the same for the 650s.
(were as, say, for 1100s the Es have the 4 valve per cylinders and Gs have the 2 valve.)

650s were only 3 years, 81,82,83

E= chain, standard
G=shaft, standard flat seat, regular bars.
GL (called L)=shaft, cruiser stepped seat, leading axle forks, pullback bars, more chrome

(I had 82 gs650g for 20+ years.)

oh, and then there also was, less common, the 650 Katana GM, all different body work, but still the 2 valve per cyclider engine.​

The frames are vastly different, due to the drive method. The wiring might have a few minor differences, but should largely be the same, depending on the year(s). Since both are '81, that shouldn't be (much of) a problem. Good news? The valve caps on the tires are directly interchangable. :encouragement: :-\\\
 
Thanks for all your thoughts. I have now asked and received clarification (ie Pictures) of what I was going to be dealing with as far as extracting it. The garage is one of those model T types, really tight as far as width but oddly like double deep. So I'd have to clean the initial hoard in the door, get first Chevette out, then second Chevette out and the bike is at the back (or front I guess) of the garage. I saw pics of the bike, looks very decent and exhaust is really nice but I'm afraid I'm going to pass. Probably 6 hours of driving and another 1/2 day extracting it, not worth it. The cost of free is too high.
 
There's nothing more expensive than a free motorcycle, anyway, so you ducked well.
 
One has a roller bearing bottom end the other has plane bearings. Thats a considerable difference. Plane bearings on the shaft drive.
