    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

650G rebuilt - hit road @ Cams

After a year hiatus I'm trying to complete my rebuild of a 1982 GS650G and I'm attempting to finish the engine assembly. I'm completely rebuilding the engine (something I?ve never done) and I?m trying to figure out how to properly time the cams. I know I need to set the pistons and cam shafts a certain way so that they work together but I?m not quite sure how. Can anyone walk me through this procedure including what tools I may need to buy? So so appreciated! The manual did not really help me out.

I've got the valves and covers installed in the heads, the pistons, crank and cam chain are installed in the "lower" section. How do I get past this point?

Which manual? this is one of the few things that my Clymer manual explains pretty well. Others will join the fun, but to get you thinking, go to four cylinder drive train forum, and look down lists for posts from member scott and back up to his beginning. He recently corrected his cam to crank timing- lots of pics to get you thinking! Is your oil pump in, ignition tming plate attached, etc...?

That's awesome, I was at 3-30 and totally confused! I've got a little bit more assembly but I'm close. Thanks a bunch!
 
Aligning the cams is very simple.

Go basscliffs website and download the manual for your bike.
It has Step-by-Step on how to do it.
(yeah the pictures are a little faded, but if you break it down and Read it, it's very simple)

Hi Mr. hdcrbeastie,

I seem to remember that Nessism just posted up a very concise procedure for timing the cams recently. A search might be fruitful. But, yes, the manual will spell it out for you. Basically TDC, line up the cam marks, count the link pins between the marks, and you're done. I think you'll need vice grips.

Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

As stated before, super simple and straight forward. only trick i have is, make sure you hold the chain taught while doing this. and during assembly, use something to hold it up out of the way. a wire clothes hanger works well to retrieve a dropped cam/timing chain. I do not know how i know this ;). lol.
Oh, and to give you somethign to drive you nuts if youre unsure.....did you remember to install the dowel locater pins in bewtween the crankcase and the cylinders? what about the between the head and cylinders? and then between the head and valve cover? lol. again, I do not know how i know to ask you that...lol
but yeah...its easy if you take your time and pay attention.
