A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

77 GS550 Dyna Installation question

Went to install a Dyna DS3-1 in my friend's 1977 GS550 this week and encountered something a little unexpected. I've done this before on my 1977 GS750 and they both had the KD ignition stock. We're going to put in Dyna coils and a coil relay mod in at some point, but haven't yet. I've installed the CRM on all of my own GS's so am very familiar with that area of the wiring harness.

After removing the points plate and installing the Dyna and magnetic rotor, etc., I wired:

1. The black/white wires coming out into the black/white trigger wires in the coils.

2. The red wire coming out of the Dyna tapped into the Orange white wire that splits to provide power to each coil. (Going to hit this with the CRM soon)

Pretty straight forward stuff, right? Next we followed the instructions for the static timing. I hooked up an extra turn signal I had:

- Negative wire going to the battery negative
- Positive plugged into the Black trigger wire coming out of the dyna

I tested both the light and ground I was using and both are fine. Battery is ~1 year old and is charging/holding charge fine (SH775 and all the regular GSR recommended "charging stuff").

Manually advancing the engine, the light never lights up. Connecting it between the black trigger wire coming out of the dyna and the black trigger wire going into the coil, it lights up. Same goes for White. Getting 12v between the dyna output wires and the coils at all times which I found weird.

I thought "lets try starting it" and it starts up easily and runs fine. Obviously we still need to properly set the static timing but it seems like I'm missing something here. From what I remember, we did everything exactly the same from when I did this to my GS750. Any tips?

Bump ... I'm hoping that it's not the dyna itself that's somehow busted but assumed that for a seemingly simple device, that they should be quite robust. Plus I'm getting the same behavior for both the 1-4 and 2-3 wire which leads me to think maybe I'm just missing something.

nvm figured it out. If you disconnect the trigger wires coming out of the coils, they're 12v to the battery. Timing light needs to be at the connection on the coil.
