That links the right one for your bike. You're after the cylinder head cover gasket AKA valve cover gasket - the same for any 76-79 8 valve GS750. The one you purchased is the next gasket down on the engine - a much more involved job to replace that.

Check your valve clearance while you're doing the job (if I didn't say this someone else would have :p).

Yea, someone like ME!

Maintenance is good. Neglected valves will cause them to burn, and could total the cylinder head too.

Any local suzuki shop should have it?

When I bought my 78 750, the PO gave me a few extra valve gaskets...so I know they make 'em!

Is it just me, or does it look like someone has done some welding around where the cam cover bolt goes into the head?

Hi Mr. drummered,

You bought an aftermarket head gasket when what you actually needed was a valve cover gasket. Have a look at the valve adjustment tutorial on my little website. If your tach send gear is in the head and not the valve cover, I would suggest getting a Real Gasket valve cover gasket. For parts, see the extensive list of OEM and aftermarket vendor links in your "mega-welcome".

Anyway, let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

THanks bccap and basscliff! I was able to get the correct gasket from Dillon Bros. site. I also was able to order a new set of front spokes which really needed replacing...does anyone have a walk through on how to install the cylinder head gasket...or being a newb, will I need special tools??? Or would I be best giving it to a mechanic?

from your original photo, you need to install a new VALVE COVER gasket, not a head gasket.

I would suspect installing a new head gasket between the top of the engine cylinders and the head would likely be a bit too challenging for your present level of technical development.

however, changing a valve cover gasket has to be one fo the easiest things a novice mechanic can begin the learning process with. Remove the valve cover by undoing all the bolts that hold it on, lift it off, remove the old gasket and clean both mating surfaces, put the new gasket in place, put the valve cover back on, and do all the bolts back up. Done.

Awesome. I'll give the head gasket a shot. I just started watching Cafe Racer TV and now all I want to do is learn how to turn this 750 into a creation of my own... I'm a drummer not a mechanic but you have to begin somewhere I suppose! thanks for all the advice

question: Can this be done with the fuel tank still attached??

question: Can this be done with the fuel tank still attached??

No. Lift up the seat. Remove the bolt at the back of the tank holding it to the frame - it's just in front of the battery box. Pull the two hoses off the petcock - a little fuel will come out of the bigger one, so I normally have a rag handy. Then grab the tank on either side and pull back gently whilst taking the weight/lifting it at the same time. If its tight raise the back of the tank an inch and wiggle the front loose. Don't pull too hard of you may scratch the underside.

You may also have to remove the horn.

I would really recommend getting a manual. Check Basscliff's website for down-loadable versions. The GS850 is the most comprehensive and most of the specifaications and procedures are the same as the 750.

You guys rock. I'm jumping in head first to try out my mechanic skills! I've heard of folks using gasket sealer before replacing the gasket...is this very necessary?

DOn't bother with sealer on the valve cover gasket. You don't want that stuff getting into the oil, and the pressure in that gasket is not likely to pass the gasket with properly cleaned surfaces and appropriate bolt pressure.

so i was going along with removing the cylinder head cover and I stripped 5 of the side cover screws...

HELP! will i have to drill these out because they are rusted tight and thats after 4 treatments of the blaster stuff the is supposed to get the screw free :(
