    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

79 gs petcock positions

Being a newbie to the Gs 1000, and no manual from the former owner,
I would like to ask a very simple question.
what are the petcock positions? I know there is a prime position, and a main position, is there no reserve? would someone tell me how they are positioned, what are 9 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 3 o'clock settings?
I test rode this bike and realized how much I missed the inline four bikes.
I think I will restore this one.

The 9 o'clock position is REServe.

The 6 o'clock position is RUN.

The 3 o'clock position is PRIme.

Generally, you leave it in RUN, unless you need to use REServe to get to the next station.

PRIme is only used if the float bowls have dried out a bit due to evaporation.
If you ride at least once a week, that should not be a problem.

Thanks Steve, the petock is painted over and I can't make out any writing on it. the former owner did not which was what other than the main setting.

LarryD taught me a good way to remember it:
6:00 position has always been RUN since time began (well, on my 67 X-5 it was that way and on all bikes I have owned since). The eariler bikes did not have the vacuum petcock, so they don't count.
I was getting mixed up on PRI and RES though. I seldom need it, but it has happened on the rare occasion. He said, FORWARD (the 9:00 position) says "I want to go forward". IOW, you have run out of fuel on the RUN position, but want to continue to go forward, so move the petcock forward. PRI, then is the other position, which is the 3:00 position.;)

at the 3 & 9 oclock position is it the circular end that highlights the fuel state or the blunt end?
 
Also keep in mind that not all petcocks have that circle indicator. :-k

They just have the lever, but the positions are the same. :D
