'79 GS1000 with stock bore, .365cam. choice between CR29 or CR31 carbs

I have done searches and have read some good information however i am looking for advise on my particular bike.

It's a '79 GS1000, and has stock bore. Has about 50,000 miles and the cylinders are still in good shape. I plan on trying to get a bit more out of the engine without going over the top as I see no point in spending a ton of money in it since I have a modern 1000cc bike as well...

Basically, I am planning on keeping the stock bore with stock pistons at this time. I would like to get a Hardweld cam with .365 lift, and install a set of Keihin CR carbs. Question is which size. I'm stuck between CR29 and CR31. I may in the future bore out the cylinders to 1085cc... I have a Dyna S ignition and will also install Dyna coils.

What are you're thoughts.

BTW, here is a photo of the bike.

in my opinion the 29s suit a mild 1000cc best
plenty of low down grunt

I'm assuming that you've got it properly jetted for the pods and pipe. Most of us are happy with the boost in performance from just those additions. :o

I'm sorry I can't really help you with your go-fast parts but below is some general information you might find handy. There are several here who like to punch out their bikes and make them go boom. rapidray, chef1366, posplayr are a few member names that come to mind. Perhaps they'll be along later. In the meantime, enjoy some S.W.A.G. :)

If you are here you probably have a 30 year old motorcycle that needs about 20 years worth of maintenance. You'll find all kinds of helpful tips, procedures, manuals, diagrams, "how-to" guides, etc, in the links below. Let's get started.

Let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Thanks for the welcome. This is an excellent site!

The exhaust is made by Jardine. I bought it as a "new old stock" item. I have tried to research this model of exhaust except have found nothing... It's with stamped "Jardine" and the install instructions also indicated this as well.

As for the suspension goes, obviously the front end has been changed. I installed a cheap set of rear shocks but would like to upgrade to Ohlins eventually.. Unfortunately, I'll need to move out the mount on the swingarm as the chain will touch the Ohlins shock...

When it comes to the carbs, I have had a lot of troubles with this set. They were rebuilt by profesionally but still not great. I have read that the 26 stockers are way to small and are hard to jet with pods anyways...

What I find interesting is that for a mild GS1000, most people recommend 29mm carbs (including dynoman) however I also have a '76 Honda CB750 which I'm working on and through research, I find that a lot of people seem to put on 29 or bigger on the 750... It doesn'tmake much sense to me how a 1000 requires the same size carbs as a SOHC 750....

I appreciate the advise and please keep it coming. I'd love to hear from people who have a mild built GS1000!

i should elaborate on my reply
having built alot of GS1000 i currently own around 20
the 29mm on 1000cc are a nice setup
on the bigger motors 1100 plus with bigger cams etc i like 33mm plenty of grunt but not huge low down power
33mm on 1000 mild engine will kill you low down power

Do the CR29 use the stock vm26 boots? Will you need to use adapters, or separate boots? Only a curious bystander.

Hi,

When it comes to the carbs, I have had a lot of troubles with this set. They were rebuilt by profesionally but still not great.

I hate to say it but those words don't really carry a lot of weight around here. Too many "professionals" will just install some cheap aftermarket carb kit, squirt some carb cleaner around, and call it done. You'll find more in-depth cleaning procedures on my little website. Carbs are one thing that just have to be done right.

Thank you for your indulgence,

tight fit but they will go in the 26mm boots
The fit is the same as the 26mm stockers. Both 29 smoothbores and 26 stockers have 34mm o.d. inlets.
When you use the 29's in the stock boots you need to open up the smaller stepped i.d. of the boot to match the carb and the port. If you don't you are wasting your time and money on the smoothbores.

I'm glad you brought up porting the boots, I was just about to ask that next. I knew the old school 29's fit, I didn't know if CR29 has the same O.D.

It sure looks like this one

Oh that's neat, the system I have however is different, the tail pipes at the end are very different and the pipes coming from the block and collect in to 1 are different too.

Thanks for posting the old add tho, neat to see
