If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Thanks Cal!
I needed some more salt thrown into that open wound. ;) :p

The carbs are easier to install if ya put the airbox in first.

DUH.
Unless you have to remove them AGAIN to change the boots.
Something about those little METAL rings that retain them that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to remove them with the box in the frame. ;)

Daniel

After working on the Panhead for most of the day,
I got to spend a little time on the beast.
Bolted up the exhaust almost. It still needs the collector clamps installed.
Discovered that I MUST have disconnected the exciter wire to the solenoid when I installed the air-box yesterday. :(
The start button has power and it worked last month.
Apparently I didn't get the video of it running after warming it up a bit so here is the initial start up where the choke did not cooperate. (you can see it drop just before the engine dies.)
There won't be any mosquitoes around for a while as the ATF and penetrating oil was the first thing to burn.
It did clear out and only has a slight miss that might be attributed to timing and valve adjustment.

As it hasn't ran in over ten years, I am happy with the results so far.
The guy that I got it from said that the oil pan leaked so he included a new pan and drain plug.
I ran it with whatever was in the crankcase.
I need to see if this might be the reason for the pan leaking...

More later. Stay tuned. ;)

Daniel

The centerstand looks nasty. Good to hear you got it running :D. What if that oil is also 10 years old? Better change it!

The oil pan will be removed and the screen cleaned.
I have several other spare oil pans so if this one is ruined,
I will replace it with one that actually has a drain plug at least.
Then, I will ride it to a car wash and see where it needs more attention to any leaks.
I used up my tach drive seals on the last two projects so that will have to wait for now.
I can't seem to find my old 750E (dead speedo) gauges to at least get a tach on it yet.
The chain is rusty and I have been soaking it with chain lube for the past month.
It might still be usable for a while anyway.

Unless ya remove the clamp, or little metal ring as you call em.
They're made to be very flexible, DUH!

Look INSIDE the boots on your 78 1000 not OUTSIDE. ;)
Just pop those out and report back, OK?

Inside what boots? Intake or airbox?
I didnt have a of a problem removing the carbs on my 1000 with the boots(both airbox and intake) right where they're supposed to be.
Mind you, the airbox must be unbolted.

SUBSCRIBED! I love a low budget bike build... heck I got less than $100 total in the "Lil Sister" cafe' of mine ... and she's on her second season. :D

Not much progress today.
I finished tightening all of the exhaust clamps, flushed the engine, changed the oil and polished the turd some more.
The oil filter cover got new acorn nuts and washers to replace the missing ones.

A teaser picture of what it might end up looking like.

Still haven't adjusted the timing, points or plugs.
Running engine with new diesel oil (Valvoline).
Seems to rev up fairly well. I still need to work on the choke linkage.

Getting ready to take my carbs off... somehow I am not as psyched up as I was.

Considering you haven't adjusted anything yet, that sounds pretty good to me :D

Making good progress!

Only spent about a few hours on it today.
Most of the time was spent sanding (polishing the turd) of a rear tail piece.
(why can't I just have NO IMAGINATION, NO DRIVE TO SUCCEED, NO PRIDE IN MY WORK and be LAZY like all of those people that just spray everything flat black?)
Cleaned some more electrical connections on the turn signals that I decided to use.
Installed the rear fender with all new bolts. (decided against the original plan of using a chrome rear fender. It was going to be too much work for now.) :(
Still haven't decided on which seat that I am going to use.

After getting rid of a certain forum member's dead beat friend's H-D,
I now have some time to get back to MY projects! ;)
So, I slapped together some of the parts for my long dead junkyard bike.

With a set of gauges and a fuel tank from GSR members and a bunch of odds and ends that were lying around.
It is almost a bike again! :D

The brakes and suspension that were previously covered in this thread work GREAT!!!
I need to adjust the handlebar back a wee bit and find a matching rear tail piece to go with the '79 seat.
Anyway, here are a few pic's from the test ride and a short video that I took when I made it back...

When I first got it...

And now, today...

More fine tuning and a valve adjustment to come no doubt.

Daniel

With Pete getting closer with his 450 down under,
I had to do some of the same. ;)

It almost hit 70 degrees out today so it was time to do some more painting.

Last week...

Today...

Still have to sand and clear-coat a few times.
I was planning on using gold as the accent color but, no gold paint.
So white it is.

Tank and side covers get finished tomorrow also, hopefully.

Hahaha yeah... 4 weeks I reckon is my deadline... I think if I'm not done by the end of November I won't make it...

That tail piece is looking good! I like that blue, should look real nice once you've got some clear on it and it's all polished up :D
