A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

When I give it some throttle, it will rev it's self to about 4.5k rpms. It wont come down unless I flick the throttle a few times. Makes shifting hard, rough ride, and downshifting super hard and sketchy.

I have checked the throttle control and cables. Cables are clean, rust free, and move freely. Throttle will snap back to place where it needs to be. The rpms dont reflect that though. I dont know what else to check.
Where should I start looking?

I just ordered new pods and made sure they are the right size and good quality to make sure air is not getting sucked in at boots. I was having this issue before I pulled the air box too :( Any other avenues I could stumbled down?

Like Ed said. Good chance you have 1 or more intake manifold o-rings leaking. They get hard and crack and cause the rpm's to rise.
Robert Barr, a member here, sells the intake o-rings you may need. They're only $4 or so for a set of 4, plus shipping, which is cheap too.
If your manifolds still have the original Phillips heads, be careful to not strip the heads when removing. Use an impact screwdriver and a GOOD fitting bit. Replace those things with Allen heads. Be sure the manifolds themselves are in good condition. Use a light coat of silicone grease or high temp bearing grease on the new o-rings to help them last. Torque to about 8 or 9 ft/lb.
I assume you've changed the jetting? You'll need to increase the main jet, raise the jet needles, play with the pilot fuel screws and remove the 2 floatbowl vent lines to minimize fuel starvation, especially at high speeds and in crosswinds. Raising the stock jet needles will help but jet needles from Dynojet would be better. You need to compare your jet needles to a '79 GS1000 and see if they're the same. If so, a DJ stage 3 jetting kit would be much better than trying to buy separate mains and working with the stock needles. Also, when you disturb the jet needles, you must do a good bench synch and follow that with a synch with a vacuum tool.
Changing to quality pods requires these changes to the jetting. Otherwise, you'll run VERY lean and you don't want that. The above suggestions assumes you have a 4 into 1 pipe and the jetting kit is made for pods AND a quality pipe.

Lots of good advice here. Sounds like you need to pull those carbs and check things out along with the intake boots. Sounds lean, lean, lean.
