Ive got a strange problem with my 80 GS1100E, When starting it makes clicking sound like an exhaust leak when it first begins to start. As soon as it start running it goes away. Ive had Vance & Hines pipes on it, & stock exhaust both with new exhaust gaskets and it still does it. Im starting to wonder if it might have something to do with the emissions stuff or the breather on top of the engine. I just cant find it and it drives me nuts. Anybody have any ideas or any experience with it ? I don't dare try tightening the exhaust bolts any more, Im in the danger zone as it is

Could be a starter clutch problem. Mine sounded like I had rocks in the engine when starting.

Could be a slightly loose tappet. Remember you have 16 of the darn things. Once the oil hits it it quiets down. I get that tick tick now and then.

New starter clutch and just set the valves but I appreciate the input. Its an exhaust sound like a loose pipe or bad gasket but it only does it once.. Mr Bill I hope you put antisieze on the bolts, stainless and aluminum tend to gall when you take the bolts out

Im starting to wonder if it might have something to do with the emissions stuff or the breather on top of the engine.

1. What "emissions stuff"? :-k There simply isn't any.

2. If you hear exhaust noises from the breather on top, you have some serious internal issues, as it is not connected to the exhaust in any way.

.

Sorry, I thought there was. I was referring to where the 5/8 or so hose comes from the air box to the top of the motor. Is that not emissions stuff ?

Just barely. That 11mm (ID) hose connects the crankcase breather to the airbox. Any fumes in the crankcase that are the result of blow-by will be routed back to the airbox, where they then go through the carbs and get burned. That is a strictly passive system, there are no moving parts to wear out or maintain.

As hinted in my previous response, if you hear noise in that system, you have much more serious problems somewhere else that you are just hearing in that system. That noise might be the result of a head gasket leaking toward the crankcase (#2 or #3 leaking toward the cam chain tunnel), which would build a bit of pressure.

My GUESS for your noise would be an exhaust gasket. The noise goes away because the gasket expands as it warms up. I have a similar noise in my 850. It lessens as the bike warms up, but never goes away. Check the angle of the header flanges and compare that to the angle of the exhaust ports. If they don't match EXACTLY, you might need a second gasket in there to help close up the angle.

.

Ill give that second gasket a try, Im afraid to break a bolt off if I tighten these any more. What makes me think youre on to something is it does it with the stock exhaust and with the V&H 4-1. Thanks for the help
