81-83 750 head and base removal.

Well, I got everything back together and I'm pleased to report that the 750 fired right up and ran great !! I only let it run for a few minutes, but, no apparent problems.

Here's some pics.

Very Nice; I need to get started on my 81 GS750EX that runs great but leaks oil like sive

Great work Larry.:)

I see a green base gasket which means Athena. Did your gasket kit have a MLS head gasket? If so, torque that bad boy after every other full heat cycle until the gasket settles down. I used a MLS head gasket on my 1000 and the nuts needed to be torqued a couple of different times while the gasket settled.

I bought all OEM; about $200 for head/base/rings and circlips. I have a complete Athena for the rest of the stuff.

Anyplace less expensive than partshark for rings, they list $22.25 per piston....or $89.00 for all four.:)
I know this was asked a couple of months ago and your bike is back together, but nobody answered your question.

Cycle Parts Nation $20.53 per piston, $82.12 for all four.

I had to look it up some time, as I might get into changing the gaskets on my wife's bike before she hits the road this spring.
Like everyone is preaching, if you're that far into it, what's another $100.
The best part is that she can't say much about it. It's for HER bike. :D

You know I get this stuff called "Carbon Off" at work for the bottom of pots and pans. I bet it would work great on pistons. :!:

Nice job Larry, looks great!

Are the jugs & head painted? And is the rest of the engine just scrubbed clean?

Still haven't opened up my 1100EX yet, but if she ends up looking as good as that when I'm done I'll be pleased!

How were the compression numbers after the new rings?

The base gasket was a gift from Josh when I was visiting this summer, I plan on re-torqueing as recommended. I'll take your word of the maker.

I only painted the head and base....for now. The bottom end of the engine was pretty grundgy and with the weather, I don't have the gumption to lay out in the driveway and scrub it off for painting. I'll get to it this spring. No compression test yet. It started right up with a little choke and settled nicely at 1100rpm after a minute or so. I'm thinking it just needs some final tuning (and a sound thrashing:evil:) and it'll be fine.:)

Go out and start that puppy and let it run at 4000 for around 20 minutes.
Seat those rings!

Hey Larry I know you and I did some texting today but I hadn't seen the pics untill now :o. You and Brian did a very nice job. I would love to help (or get in the way) when you start in on the GK. This Saturday is supposed to be in the upper 40's and I know you wanna. Let me know.:)

Maiden voyage

Maiden voyage

I just got back from the "Maiden voyage" for the new top end.

First, I had to put a little air in the tires and $5.00 of gas. I then went for a 25 mile ride around the west side of Indy. Everything went great !! It wanted to idle around 2,000 rpm so, I adjusted the master idle knob until it settled at about 1100 rpm. I varied the rpm while riding and never took it past 6,000rpm. I got on it pretty good quite a few times and it responded by rocketing me down the road !!!

The best part ?? I've been home about 10 minutes and NO sign of leaks !!! A leaky head gasket was the whole reason for the teardown.

It's about 45 degrees outside and it's a good day !!!!!:)

Great pix Larry D!

Great pix Larry D!

Stellar job on documenting your work with great pix! My 82 750E is beginning to leak from base gasket & wee bit from head gasket, too (34k total miles; 10k of that after 14 years of proper storage when I put it on the road again in Aug 2008.)

Will be my 1st GS engine rebuild (lots of experience with GM v-8's and Japanese 2 strokes.) Thanks for your efforts to document your work for the rest of us.
