A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

81 GS550T Full Rebuild...In Ohio

Cool Scott... Sci's idea sounds like it could work? I didn't have to strip my carbs, just dipped and assembled...

Soda blast those carbs. They will look like brand new afterwards. Harbor Freight sells the media, and you can make your own gun for cheap.

Does someone have some good directions on making your own since the stuff I saw on YouTube looked suspicious last night?

Received my replacement end of the tach drive from TKent02 today...thank you

I'll try to clean it up this week and put that together.

I think this was probably the directions I worked from. I'm sure I had to make a few adjustments to get it going well with the flow rate I had available. Maybe that's the difference between my result and Tom's. He probably has a real compressor.

It goes through the $0.50 boxes from Dollar General pretty quickly. I'd get a few bucks worth to do a set of carbs. Keep it dry, of course.

I've done the homemade blaster too and it didn't work so well. I think you need a pretty hefty compressor. And be prepared to clean up a lot of soda if you don't have a cabinet.

You asked if using the dremel with a wire wheel works? It works great. Will leave those carbs nice and shiny. I'm at work now but will post up some before and after pics when I get home tonight for ya.

That is actually one of the problems with using a Dremel and a wire wheel.

There is a big difference between CLEAN carbs and SHINY carbs.

I will take the natural, matte finish any day over the shiny wire-wheeled look. :o

.

True Steve, it does depend on what one prefers. I like shiny and clean myself but nothing wrong with matte. However, if I'm gonna paint the body, I want all the old crud off and this is the quick and easy way I found without a blasting apparatus (which, IMO, leaves one of the best finishes...someday I will have one).

Here's what you can expect...

Cleaned up the replacement tach drive from Tkent02:

I'll stop by Lowes in the AM to get what I'll need to try soda blasting.

That looks a little cleaner Scott, keen to see your soda blasting setup... may have to try that myself one day.

Thanks Pete; After putting in 7 hours at work today working on our phone scripts, I picked up the hose from Lowes and two 5-lb bags of baking soda from Walmart. I'm going to try getting over to the garage tomorrow and give it a shot.
