A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Howdy, folks.

I have looked around and around the forum and tried on the general internet as well. I can't find any definite "original" length for the rear shocks on my bike.

Measuring eye to eye (center to center), they are exactly 12.5" on the center stand, wheel off the ground. The rust on the chromed springs makes me think it's likely these are actually original, but I don't want to assume. Some parts on this bike may not be original (and may be from random spares the PO had around). I believe the GS650G (not L) had 13-5/8" shocks. Can anyone verify or point me to some kind of solid data about the original/correct shock length?

Cheers

Hope everyone is staying safe with all these fires and the plague.

You are correct. on my '82 with the original adjustable damper shocks anyways. Mind you,the 5/8" isn't going to make much diff.

My 81 L had 12.5 inch shocks.....they probably were the originals ....I replaced with 13 inch versions. Much easier to get on/off centerstand as bonus.
