OK, stock 1100E motor, K&N pods, Kerker megaphone with long since blown out packing, Dynojet jet kit, Dyna S ignition, clean carbs, just synchroed. Runs great when cold but gradually develops off idle stumble (runs great off idle regardless), which would indicate rich situation. However pops on decel, which would indicate lean. Where do I take this? Pilot jet, air jet?

I have the same bike and set up except I have the V&H canister 4-1 pipe. When I did the jetting I had what I would call a sputter off idle when it warmed up. I raised the needles and it stopped. My popping on decel then turned into more of a growl.

Wait for Keith to chime in though he has a bit more knowlege and experience than I do.

WOO HOO!! :P It worked. Anyway the explaination helped me to better understand how things work so I hope it helps...

Before making the assumption that the off-idle stumble is due to it being too rich i'd have a close look at the plugs. On more than one occasion I've had a lack of response off-idle that was cured by raising the needles (making it richer).

OK sounds like raising the needle is my next step. They are already at the second to bottom slot so I don't have too much more adjustment left. What position do you Dynojet owners have yours at?

I forget how many notches are on the needle but I was five from the top. I think I had one or two more to go

I have an '83 1100E with K&N PODS, Supertrapp 4 into 1 system, Dynojet kit, and Dyna ignition. My needles are at the highest position. My symptom was rough running at steady throttle in the 3,000-4,000 rpm range. Each step higher on the needle made it better. Now it is like buttah.

Joe

I just reviewed some of my notes... I had sputtering off idle so I moved the needles up and then had a flat spot at 3000 to 4000 rpm so I moved them up again and then it was smooth throughout the whole rpm range. I started on the 3rd groove from the top like the kit suggests and ended up 5 from the top.

RJ,

Please give us an update when you have made your changes. Thanks

Hey Joe, what size are your main jets?

Jethro,

I'll have to check when I get home. I believe they are the largest of the main jets supplied in the Dynojet kit. Remember that Dynojet jet sizes do not correspond to Mikuni jet sizes.

******EDIT*******

I checked the instructions on the Dynojet website and found the answer. The kit is for both Stage 1 and Stage 3. With Pods and a pipe you use the Stage 3 jets. The main jet for Stage 3 is DJ138.

I'm running the same setup as you guys...'82 1100E, K&N pods, Dynojet jet kit and Supertrapp 4 into 1. I used the largest jets supplied with the kit (DJ 138's I think) and started with the needle at their recommendation but ended up moving the clip all the way down to the bottom notch. I also increased my pilot jets to a 50 from 47.5. I think stock is 45 but my carbs came from a Katana which I believe had a one size larger pilot to start with. I get great throttle response all the way through the rev range and not stumble whatsoever and my plugs look fine but I still get some decel popping but have learned to live with it. I think it's just more amplified from the megaphone style muffler and the external tuning discs. run with the Supertrapp.

I just ordered the 50 size pilot jets for my '83 1100E. BikeBandit had a set of four for $8.99.I have the same setup as CDN Bandit. I always wondered why the Dynojet Kit for my bike didn't come with pilot jets. It only makes sense that you would need bigger pilot jets because you have more air flow. Plus I'm hoping that the bigger jets won't get clogged as often and will save me some carb cleaning time. My ZRX had a known issue with clogging due to small pilot jets. The dealer replaced mine with larger jets after they cleaned the carbs twice in the first couple months I owned the bike. The problem got better but I still had to clean the carbs at least once a year.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

How do you identify which type of jet you need other than pulling one out and comparing to the picture on Bike Bandit.? My manual just says #45 but gives not other info.

I still have the stock # 45 pilot jets in and would like to get them bigger as well.

Because I have taken my carbs and cleaned them about a thousand times I have a pretty good idea what the pilots look like. Plus the carb type is BS34. I did some research and these carbs are grouped into BS30/96 at most places. Here's a description of BS series carbs from Motorcyclecarbs.com: BS series
Between these two I am 95% sure I ordered the correct jets. Here's a link to the BikeBandit page I ordered from: Pilot Jets
Just select the size from the drop down and add to cart. Notice that this is a pack of four jets.

Since I'm not absolutely sure these are the correct jets maybe someone can take a look and verify for us.

Thanks,
Joe

Hey guys, sorry I haven't gotten back to you. Thanks to all for the replies. I just got a new Vance and Hines megaphone bolted up to the bike and wonder of wonders all my problems went away. No popping on decel, no stumbling off idle. Wow! Needles are on 5th from the top notch, fantastic carburetion. Got a great deal on the exhaust (at least as far as my internet shopping has served me) $245 from MAW, minus 5% for just happenning to order on the 2nd Thursday before Xmas. Must have meant to be. Once again thanks to all the guys who tried to help. I'm sure I'll be asking some more silly questions down the road.

RJ,

SWEET!!! You gotta be happy about that. It sure is nice when the bike runs right.

Joe

Glad to hear it RJ

When I jetted my bike it was the first time for me and I am comforted to know that it seems we all have our needles raised to the 5th or 6th notch.

Ride on
