Howdy folks, I recently bought a N.O.S. speedo for a 82 1100EZ on ebay.
My question is, the damaged speedo that I am replacing it with, has 2 wires
coming out of it, 1 black/red & 1 blue/red. According to the schematics, they
go to a "speed sensor". The N.O.S. speedo does not have these 2 wires coming
out of it. Other than that, they are both identical.
What does this "speed sensor" do, and what will happen if I install the N.O.S.
speedo that does not have the 2 wires? Do I need to splice the 2 wires in the gauge cluster togather in order to complete the circut??
Anyone know anything about this???

Sounds like that gauge is made to work with an electronic wheel speed sensor. Sounds like your bike has (had) a cable-driven system. You'll either need to find/rig up an electronic sensor or buy a different gauge.

If the 82 is the same in that aspect as the 83 1100E, which I'm sure it is, you should have a speedo drive gearbox by your lower left fork leg, in between the fork leg and wheel.

This gearbox drive the speedometer cable which in turns drive the speedo

The speed sensor is for the auto canceling turn signals. It reads from the speedo itself and sends a signal to the controler to cancel the signal after speed/distance increases.

Its the reason most of these bikes self cancelers dont work.

I just saw a NOS one on Ebay. Mine actually still works but I thought about buying it because of all the horror stories about them here.

Its the only piece of electrical equip on my bike that hasnt been replaced with NOS in the last two years. Literally.
Id like to get my hands on one.
Chef, I didnt see that one on ebay. If you see it again and dont want it for yourself, post that link!
Hook a (GS) brother up.

Thanks for all the info....What Im doing here is getting stuff ready for a resto project and Im building a "NEW" set of gauges for it. Im quite familiar with the 82 1100ez as I have owned one off & on since.....well, 1982. The speed sensor threw me for a loop, I have never had any problems with one so I never knew it even existed, until now. The canceling turn signal makes alot of sence. The schematics show the 2 wires in question, going to the signal box, so if I use the N.O.S. speedo, I will not be able to use self canceling signals? Thats not a big deal to me as I always check my signals after making a turn.

One more thing, I got my current ride, a 1982 1100EZ from a guy in Shakopee back in 2000. I did a partial restoration as the bike was in fair shape to begin with. New paint, decals, exhaust........now Im looking to build a custom bike based on the same year & model, 1982 1100ez. Thanks again.

It might of sold but I'm not sure. If it ever relists I'll let you know.

No sensor no auto cancel.

In my experience, also having bought an 1100e new in 83' I cant remember them ever working without hiccups if at all. Ive tried to get mine to work consistantly but have never succeeded
Ive only tried "good" used sensors and havent been able to find an NOS one yet.
For the system to work as its supposed to you have to have the correct T/S controller (over $150 new), The correct Master gauge cluster controller (over $250 new), the speedo sensor ($?), a T/S switch on the bars that works perfectly with no sticking (over $75 new) and the specific Suzuki only T/S relay (over $75). Thats alot to cancel a turn signal.
These are prices I paid.

These parts can be found cheaper but if its not new and after installing they still dont work you start looking at hammers differently.

I'd recommend to anybody unless you have a harder head than me to keep your thumb oiled and forget about the auto cancel so called "feature".

Oh ya, a question, a custom cluster with an 85 mph speedo?

Come to think of it, after reading this post and recalling during the 5 years I have owned my 83 1100E, I never had a problem with the self cancelling feature but then again I never waited for the bike to turn the signal off. I guess being raised on bikes BEFORE self cancelling....

any speed over 85 mph.....Im not looking down at the speedo!!
Lets just say I like the 85 mph speedo because its what came on the bike.
I could go many different directions on this project, however, I dont even have the bike Im going to build. All I know is that its going to be a 1982 1100ez. I have a red one now, thats what I drive the most. My 82 1000sz katana does not get driven a whole lot as I have a TON of $$$$$$ in it. So, I want to build a custom 82 ez, not to exotic, maybe some off the wall paint scheme, 4 into 1 pipe, some polished parts here & there.....what ever comes to mind at the time.

By the way, the auto canceling signals on my bike have always worked fine.
I must be lucky!!
