I love it!! I have been trying to find something that i could mount my phone on my bike with, i have never heard of Otterbox before. That is totally something i am going to steal!!

Thanks GT!!

....and then after looking at my own post, thought that it would be good to add some zip ties around the clip:

You're going to get to the point that you'll need to mount an iPad to it so you can have the GPS and the speedo both on at the same time!

I got to a point early this year where I was doing a lot of auto repairs and kept having to run to the parts store to use the ODB-2 reader. Did you know they have one of those things for the iPhone?? So neat!

I actually downloaded Motion GPX Drive. It has a speedo with the GPS. Sweet.

Although I pad.....hmmmmmmm :p

Had I been thinking, I would have put a couple of USB cables in my wiring harness when I refurbished it. Seriously. :)

I took a 60 mile round trip this morning and realized that the GPS App on my phone will necessitate a charger of some sort. I've been thinking it over for a few days and have started my first attempt.

Went to the Wal-Marx and picked up a plug in charger with the 2.1 amp capacity for an iPad. I got this not because I am going to incorporate my ipad into my bike, but because I have seen the GPS on my phone still drain the battery while on a 1 amp charger. The faster charger will serve me well. It also has a 1 amp USB port.

It looks like this out of the box:

But then comes apart really easy. One screw and everything else just pops apart.

I opened up the plug end and clipped the wires so I can wire it through my fuse block. Grey is ground and white is positive.

Trying to mock up a few places to mount it. This was the first choice:

While this is a pretty good location I still need about one more inch on the cable to keep it from stretching too tight when I turn.

I'll try some other locations tomorrow. I put it away for the night and went in to help with the kiddos. :D

That's actually not a half bad idea. I may end up trying to do the same thing for my GS. Have you thought about a USB extension? Would give you the length you need to be able to run the "power outlet" USB plugin wherever it's most convenient for the phone charging cord to go.

Yep, thought of that as well.

I've been thinking through some different options and haven't settled on one yet. I want to keep it away from heat if possible and hide it as well. When I'm finished I will do what I can to "weather proof" the unit. That most likely will involve some good electrical tape unless someone has a better idea.

The other thing I'm keeping in mind is to do this as inexpensively as possible while still having a durable unit. There are some cool options out there if you want to spend about $40. I'm saving my pennies for paint though. This is going to cost me about $10 max.

I actually am having an idea as I type this. This unit is small enough that if I could come up with a box about the same width and depth of the phone case, I could mount it to the back of the plastic case, put this charger in it along with the usb cable, run my wires and have it all in one compact housing. Man, now I've just got to come up with a way to make that happen.

Continuing with the charger..... thrift wins out on this mod.

I decided to make this work with what I have on hand.

Cut the tabs off:

Soldiered some lead wires, put some heat shrink on and taped that puppy up:

Taped the USB cable into the plug and mounted it to my signal control unit with some 3M double sided tape:

Wired it up to the PC-8 Fuse Block (love that thing):
DE4DEA3D-E30A-49B4-A50D-F1810968284F-3411-00000348DB00B39C.jpg

Clipped the cable into the belt clip on the back of the case:

And voila!

Good to go.

Got a call from my trusty local bike shop and my windshield was in. Picked it up on the way home to lunch and wound up with my first attempt at placement.

It's raining here today so I can't ride yet. that will be the true test. I like the Spitfire. The idea is to have it knock some of the wind off first and second to match the lines of the bike.

I'll try this out configuration out first:

Heeey GK..... Good to hear from you. Thanks. How's the bike?

I just took a ride down the bypass and that spitfire makes the biggest difference. Wow. I have a little buffeting, but will try to make some minor adjustments here and there. For the most part its great. Completely different feel than without.

The bike, well it's a story all in itself.....it runs, but the idle is really bugging me, it's still dying, but at least I am riding as much as possible, and I'll worry about it once winter comes along...

I have been watching your thread, just been quiet, and reading....

Glad your enjoying the bike, after all the work you have put into it, I am sure your having fun riding as well.....

I am enjoying riding. I've got a few things I'll need to address this winter as well but nothing major. I was keeping up with your idle issue. Aggravating. At least you can and are riding it. That's the best part. And it looks amazing!

I'm replacing the metal bracket I used to mount my phone case. The current one is to thin and has too much vibration. Picked up a piece of scrap tonight that will do nicely when I'm finished.

I think I've decided on paint as well. Black with brandywine insets, gold pinstripe all covered in black candy. Stock look with a modern twist. It will look black from a distance but then the insets come out as you get close. The badges are GOLD. I may have them covered in a black candy as well.

We'll see.....

Sounds like she is gonna look really good.....

Before the season ends, I will have to go and take a few pictures of the bike, she is starting to get a bit dirty, so a good wash and polish, a few pics, and wrap her up for some wrenching over the cold......

We purchased a new house, and it has a nice big garage, more room to work in, I am looking forward to it.....

And I have that Harley to polish up as well.....

Going to be a busy winter....

New house, bigger garage. Sounds like you've got your priorities straight GK!

Glad to hear you have something to do over the winter. We moved here from Florida and my first the first winter was WAY cold, even for this region. I thought I was going to go crazy. Had cabin fever bad. I've learned to take on hobbies during the winter.

Ok, today's report:

The bracket I used to mount the phone case was too thin and was vibrating too much for my liking. Needed something more substantial.

Came up with this. Took some channel and got to work with my dremmel, drill and grinder. A little paint and this was the result:

I made some cuts so I could closer match the angle of the gauges. I also cut slots in it for a zip tie to go through and secure the case to the bracket.

Here it is with 3M tape and a zip tie ready for the case.

This bracket will work much mo better. Looks almost like it belongs on the bike.

Good stuff GT! Been a bit slack following your thread lately but she's looking good! That paint should be nice too...

Love the phone holder too!

As for the screen, try making it a bit more vertical.

First test run with my home made fly screen had too much buffeting, angled it more vertically and the difference was amazing.

Thanks Pete. Hey I really like the Cucciolo thread!

It seemed like I was talking to myself there for a little while. :) Thought all my rowdy friends had settled down.

I went for a ride this afternoon and then just walked in the door from doing a grocery run. I feel like a kid who just got his license. "Hey, I'll go!" every time we need something.

The windshield make the biggest difference. Have to have one with the L buckhorn bars. My thought today while riding was, "Wow, this is a joy!" There is some minor buffeting. I'll raise it up a little though and see what that does.

The phone holder works great. Lovin that. If my bike weren't so loud with the V&H I'd devise an inexpensive bluetooth for my helmet. But I don't think it'd be worth the effort. Plus I'm not sure I need the distraction!

Mate I know exactly how you feel! I'm always wondering what I can do that involves taking her out for a spin... hahahha

Glad you're liking the Cucciolo thread too, hopefully I can get moving on it again soon!

Oh, and no don't do the bluetooth thing, leave the phone just as a speedo/GPS, there're enough idiots on the road trying to kill us without committing suicide via distraction
