82 GS 650 E <- chain drive model, no spark.

I need a little guidance. A little back round on me. I can read diagrams, use both a test light and volt ohm meter on testing things. Know ohms law.

I've had this bike for many years and going to sell it. Going to ask $450. Need to get it running. Who wants a non-running bike eh? Ran last year, this year I try'd to start it, had it try to start and fired for around 10 sec and died. Now I have no spark. 1 single fuse box and another one with 4 fuses in one box. All have power to and thru depending on ign key position on or off. It has the 2 electronic pick-ups and a no point style system.

I have power on the Org/w wire for each coil, no power on that O/w wire on the ignitor. Test light clamp on the Pos batt post to probe the neg ground wire for ignitor shows a good ground. Key on, the Neutral light and oil light is lit up.

I could by-pass by a jumper wire to power up the ignitor and try again, but don't really want to. Where should I look to find out, as the kill switch, ( Works by the way as I put it in kill, power goes away from the coils. ) The coils and ignitor are on the same circut. And if the ignitor didn't get power on the O/w wire, thinking that's why a no spark.

I haven't got so far yet to ohm check the coils, pickups, each wire to the ignitor and coil side to the ignitor. And also thinking where they all tie together is in the head light bucket? Bad connection there?

Thanks for any info. I did go to Bikecliffs web sight for diagrams. And for what it's worth, when I 1st got it a no-charging prob. Bought a new voltage reg/rectifier and A/C gen.

I think you have pretty much solved your problem with your excellent description. :clap: :clap:

The kill switch does feed the coils and the ignitor. If the ignitor has no power, check the wiring between the kill switch and the ignitor. I don't know how many connectors are in that line, use your test light to check both sides of each connector.

On the 650 shafties, the orange/white wire comes from kill switch ,feeds the ignition coils,and then carries on to a 4way connector that heads down to ignitor . But the shafty ignitor is different from the E.

It won't be in headlight bucket....my 4way is right under seat. My ignitor is mounted under airfilter box - where is yours mounted? Trace the ignitor wires back up and find this plug connector - make sure o/w is hot going thru it

My ignitor is the same, under the air box. Saves me some time on hunting. Thank you both for the info. I thought about just using a by-pass wire to power it up, but then I didn't find the prob.
