DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Will this work, if I use the carbs and all from the '82. Will these carbs lineup to fit the airbox on the '79, or will I have to change airbox aswell.

Yes, you'll need the airbox as well. The carbs are different.

You'll also need the driveshaft, all the electronic ignition stuff (coils, igniter, pickups, ignition rotor) and possibly the throttle and throttle cables ('82 has one throttle cable, '79 has two). Also, the '82 has a different stator with more output, so you'll need to update the regulator/rectifier (basically take care of the standard GS charging upgrades) if you haven't already.

Agreed with most of the above but you won't need new coils or a new regulator/rectifier.

Nice catch! The '79 has points, so I assumed the coils were different. But after perusing parts diagrams, the OEM coils are indeed the same part number.

As far as the regulator/rectifier, my point was more that you should make sure this is upgraded; both the '79 and '82 parts are dodgy. The '82's 18 pole stator does put out a little more juice than the '79's 12 pole, so the remaining lifetime of an original '79 reg/rect is unknown but questionable. Yes, it should work for some amount of time, but I wouldn't rely on it for long.

Also, if the '82 GS850 donor is a G model and not a GL, you might want to grab the fusebox if possible so you can upgrade to ATO blade fuses. (No idea why, but the '82 GL uses glass fuses and the G has the ATO fusebox.)

Well iguess I'm getting all the information from you guys that I expected, everything. I hoped for. So here's another route ithink I can take to avoid alot of work now. I was thinking of just switching the jugs from the '82 to the '79, the jugs are the reason that I needed to get '79 running. The cylinders are ovre spec. Limits.

So I got some pretty quick answers on my original question, but not on my second question. Have I done something to ****off the people in the know,,,,,,,,?????????

I can't answer your question directly but give it a day or two as this has been the holiday weekend.

OK, I sort of saw two questions in your post:
1. Will the '82 850 engine fit in a '79 850.
2. Will you have to change the airbox.

The answer to your second question was actually answered FIRST, in the very next post, which was posted less than an hour after your question.

If there is a different "second question" involved, I don't see it. :-k

.

The cylinder should interchange fine. Suzuki evolved the part number over the years but I don't think the changes prevent interchange.

Thanks Hannibal and Nessism for reading my third question and answering it. Appreciated muchly. Now here comes the kicker, I spoke to the guy who has this engine and he's telling me it has a kick starter and he's pretty sure it has 28 mm carb. intakes, so this tells me it's a '79, going to see after work today.
