82 GS1100E 21 more hp than 81? How?

reading model info on allsuzukimotorcycleseverbuilt website. Says 82GS110E much more powerful. anyone know the details of the differences? (21hp is a lot!!!) thanks

I think you miss read something, I looked and it list the 81 1100E as 100hp and the 82 1100E as 111hp.

the valve seat cut is revised for 82 and it has a differant air cleaner.

I have the motorcycle reports report for the 82 and 83 1100E and the cycle world test of the 82 list the claimed HP as 108hp
the cycle world test of the 83 1100E also has the claimed HP as 108
the 83 has bigger cams, free'er flowing exhaust and air box and it is rated as the same HP!!!

the CYCLE test of the 82 had it as being slower than the 81!!!

As you already know, the color is the key ... Joe Nardy claims to have the "faster, nicer, Blue one." (his is an '83 by the way). Steve (Plasterdog) has the "Red is getting much better" one (also an '83, which he of course made faster by removing some metal from the sump with a well placed drill bit -- never mind the pool of oil on the floor), and Hoomie has a 1983 Silver one (no claims that I know of yet).

Obviously there must be some major gains to be had by simply choosing the right color!!:lol:

Seems I remember the '80, '81, '82 were all rated @ 105 horsepower and the '83 was listed @ 108 horsepower. Didn't sound right to me either as the '83 had a re-designed air box and better cams. Only 3 horsepower between the two models..?? Terry.

from my reading up on the subject, the improvements to the 83 were aimed more at improving the low-mid range performance.

I also read deeper into the 83 test report and it also says the 82 was 105hp even though the same magazines test on the 82 said 108!!!!!

the motorcycle reports is cool to have but reading the differant magazine articles is rather confusing. as one test has the 83 as running the 1/4 in 11.33 and another did it in 10.88
a two tone blue and white ES was fastest while a red E was slowest.

the 83 1100E/ES gained .5mm more lift on both cams, intake cam timing advanced, forged pistons (82 and older were cast) larger rotor (higher output charging) better flowing air box intake, 5mm larger outlets on mufflers.
all for a claimed 3 hp (Dependant on which published claims you choose)

Chef, Where is the straight cut gear info? I had to get my straight cut gears from Falicon (-:

Straight cut gears are very noisy so the stockers didn't have straight cuts that I ever heard of but I am close to 52 years old and may be losing it. I think I'm going to retire from the repair business after the end of this month

No GS1100 was ever released from the factory with straight cut primary gears!!! Even the mighty 1150 had helical cut gears.

Another vote here for the "Starry Blue Metallic" 83 GS1100E!!!!! A buddy of mine has a red one, and mine is definitely faster.........:-D
