    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

82 gs1100G every valve to tight?

I haveclymer manuel have gone over Basscliffs guide. but all my valves appear to be too tight. the bike runs good starts fine, but I decieded to check the valves I have a PT performance gauge it has MM and Inches. smallest is MM.038 In .0015 next is MM .051 in .002 next one is mm .063 in .0025 this appears to be correct in measuring valve clearence from .03 to .08 in MM but no gauge will fit between the shims and cam. any suggestions. Maybe im doing something wrong Thks Jordan.
 
Here's the Suzuki method for checking clearances; you did position all the cams properly before you tried checking clearances?

#1 exhaust cam lobe pointing forward parallel with the top of the head
- check #1 exhaust
- check #2 exhaust

rotate crank 180 degrees
#1 intake cam lobe pointing up perpendicular to the top of the head
- check #1 intake
- check #2 intake

rotate crank 180 degrees
#4 exhaust cam lobe pointing forward parallel to the top of the head
- check #3 exhaust
- check #4 exhaust

rotate crank 180 degrees
#4 intake came lobe pointing up perpendicular to the top of the head
- check #3 intake
- check #4 intake

I think it's easier to judge when a lobe is straight up, so for the steps where one lobe is supposed to be sideways, I look at the other lobe and make sure it's straight up (from the head surface). The cam retainer block thingies and bolts are good points of reference.
 
Sounds like someone neglected that poor engine. Hope the valves aren't damaged.

Hey Ed,

His post stated the bike starts & runs fine, that made me wonder if everthing was in the correct position when he checked the clearances...
 
Ok i checked all of the shims from left cylinder No1 Ex 2.65 in 2.55 no 2 ex 2.65 in 2.70 no 3 ex 2.65 in 2.70 no 4 ex 2.75 in 2.60. i switched one of the shims and i could put the .30 gauge in there so I guess all of the valves are tigh and the PO just neglected the valves. now wheres a good place to order valves obviously I can swith a few around but i will need some. Thanks alot for the replys.
 
When I first did my shims (I negelcted them for way too long:o) none of them had better than .003 clearance. The bike ran, but it was hard to start and when I got some clearance on the shims, it made a huge difference in performance...:D

Ok thks ill look for the spread sheet. Now im just trying to get into the shim club so that I can exchange some shims and get back on the road. All of the comments and answers have been very helpfull and again Thank You. Jordan
