A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

82 GS550L Weak Spark/Single Spark

vacuum leaks are the #1 culprit for high idle. Bad intake boots, o-rings. missing carb sync caps or the vacuum line for the petcock leaking or not plugged off. Poorly adjusted throttle or a *very* bad sync.

Hmmm, I recently replaced the exhaust gaskets. Not sure if those could cause a vacuum leak or not. I'll double check everything tonight and get back with results.

*Edit: I also gave it throttle while it was hanging at 5k RPM's and it bogged down to 4k roughly.

Ok guys, a little update:
Upon installing the Dyna ignition, spinning her over and having the engine scream at 5k RPM's idling she won't run now. It'll turn over, I still have good, consistent spark on all four plugs, fuel is getting to the combustion chamber and I have a range of 125psi-140psi across all four cylinders. Why won't it light off? What am I missing now?

Shawn, I've been lurking this site for many months, but registered today to let you know I appreciate this thread. I also picked up a cheap, 82 GS550L, and have been fighting trying to get it to run and be reliable. I've cleaned & synched the carbs, replaced all o-rings seals, stator & RR, plugs & wires, adjusted valves, etc. It ran great for a little while, then recently started having electrical problems as well (dies suddenly when warming up, and won't restart for hours; no charge voltage detected anymore). It sounds like I need to do the Dyna DS3-2 upgrade as well, and redo the stator papers (guessing R/R grounding issue and possibly bad battery).

Hello phanham! Welcome! I'm glad to hear someone else is working on a 550L. Just a thought on the warming up/dies problem, could it be resistance somewhere in the ignition system that is just within spec while cold but increases as it heats up? I highly recommend the Dyna upgrade. Like the guys said before me, start with the easiest and most obvious and work your way back (I've shot myself in the foot multiple times by not taking that advice :P). The GS550 is a good bike from what I've experienced and I kinda want to keep improving it if I'm honest. I am replacing the cylinder head now that I've found the bolt holes where the header bolts go are completely non-repairable. I will keep you posted as I progress and I welcome any insights you have from what you've found on your bike!
