    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

82 GS650G Running Issues

Hi All,

I have an 82 GS650G sitting here. It sat for about 2 years. Starts on choke and will get down to about half choke still on idle, however it doesn't come all the way off choke and will stall as soon as you touch the throttle. All that's been done to it so far is fresh gas and some seafoam added to the fresh gas.

Any help, ideas, tips on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Unless the carbs were fuel stabilized or completely drained before bike went storage 2 years ago, it's unlikely that fresh gas and seafoam will save you from carb fun. Probably full carb rack teardown, dip, (or ultrasonic) ,new o-rings.
These carbs have tiny passages that once clogged, resist quickee cleaning methods. Having to leave "choke" on and unable to advance throttle mean your idle circuit passages are not passing enough mixture.

Did you just get this critter?
 
Sounds like it needs the typical carb cleaning. Because it actually starts, the valves might be close to 'right', but you won't know if they are close to being 'wrong' unless you check them.

If you want to do the job yourself, don't waste your money on carb kits. Go to cycleorings.com and get the kit for your bike, then grab a can of Berryman's Carb Cleaner Dip and click HERE for the rebuild tutorial.

If you don't want to do it yourself, there are a few of us here that will do it for you, for a modest fee, of course. :encouragement:

Oring kit here. dont waste time ad money on kits you don't need. When removing the mixture screws ( the ones on top and at the rear of the carbs by the head ) first turn them in slowly and stop when hey seat GENTLY..record how many turns in each one goes and set them the same when you reassemble the rack.

EDIT,, remove the intake manifolds ( carb holders ) and measure the ID of the groove the oring goes in. See page 3 at cycleorings and put in new intake orings

Welcome to GSR.

Just another vote for carb cleaning. THe symptoms you state are the exact symptoms of carb passages clogged up. And spraying some carb cleaner in here and there is not likely to take care of it.
Keep in mind that each carburetor is actually 3 carburetors all built into one, and it is your low speed (idle) that is clogged up the most.

And another vote for Cycle O-Rings.
 
Thank you everyone for the good advice and links... I started the teardown on the carbs and found that a part of the choke is broken on the 4th carb. I'm not sure what the part is called, and ill have to wait til daylight to get a good picture, but when I move the choke rod it pulls these little rods out of the carb and the one on the 4th carb the end that connects to the rod is broken off and doesn't pull out currently. So I will be looking into that while cleaning up everything else to put it back together.
