DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Picked up an 82 GS850L today and it turns over but does not start. I took a look at and found that the petcock was shot and the carbs weren't getting fuel so I have one on the way. I'm assuming this bike hasn't been ran in a long time so carburetors probably have to be cleaned if not rebuilt. Just wondering if I should go ahead and rebuild them now or wait to see if it starts with a new petcock. I'm new to this forum so any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard: Pic are always nice.

If you can pull the tank and rig up a way to flow gas into the carbs there is no harm to see if it will fire.
If you do use Starter Fluid (a no no ) be sparing.
Also it may very well not run right as jets and passages are clogged.
Also if there is a bunch of crap it the tank it should be cleaned out.
My tank is coated, but I still have a strainer on the petcock and an in line filter.

This is just to see if there are any bad knocks and it is worth digging in.

I'll be sure to get some pics up as soon as possible. There was some left over gas in the tank that was pretty gnarly and the tank was pretty rusted inside from what I saw so I'm definitely going to get that cleaned out. I'll probably try to get something rigged up to get some fuel to the carbs.

See the link in my signature for a link to the mega-welcome. You'll find service manuals, tutorials, and gobs of information with just a few clicks. We recommend spending some time reading what's there so you can put together a plan for fixing your bike up to make it road-worthy.

Definitely do a full teardown, cleaning, and rebuild of those carbs. It's time consuming but easy and cheap, just need few new o-rings. You can find the link to tutorials on BassCliff's website (linked from the mega-welcome).

Welcome!
