A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

This is something I haven't seen on other Katana's ive looked at, but its on mine.. looks like there should be 2 but only one is on. Its on the passenger side frame bolted to the right side shock.. what is that for and is it needed? should I find another one for the left side? I will take a pic and post it

That is a steering damper, and generally there will be only one (cue bad Highlander joke here)

is it really needed?? the bushing inside both ends fall out and don't really do much since its sloppy.. or are bushings available for them.

thanx.

It came stock without one, so shouldn't really need it. I don't remember much about that bike when it was new (I was barely old enough to be into street bikes then), or if it had a reputation for having a twitchy front end.

I can't say for sure if yours is needed, but I have a hard time imagining someone pushing that 550 to the point where it would be required.

That it is on there at all might point to some problem (bearings, alignment, poorly balanced wheel) in the front end that a PO thought could be alleviated with the steering. It'd probably be best to take it off so you can evaluate the front end properly.

Are there any markings on that damper rod to help identify whether replacement parts might be available?

there is a name on it but I forgot what it was,, I will write it down tomorrow.. thanx again. :)

I don't have one on my 550 kat and it's one of the best handling and enjoyable machines to ride I own. Like it's on rails! So long as everything else is in good order I think you'll be fine to take it off and forget about it.

thanx for the info. I will try and get the bike ready for next month and give it a try without it on.
