I have taken the carbs apart and found that the needles r an adjustable type(many grooves to put the c clip in), is this stock??? last time i had a set of these apart the needle was not adjustable!!

and the main jets r 118...has someone modified these??? needle is pointed but angle at tip is almost 90...very blunt with enough angle to still come to a point

I don't recognize the "R 118", but the number is typical of what DynoJet (DJ) might use.

The DJ 118 is equivalent to a Mikuni 110. Depending on which 1100 you have (E or G), that's either one size larger or two sizes smaller than stock.

.

early dynojet kits was not very pointy.
are you in the states or UK?
i have been told that GS's across the pond had adjustable needles from the factory.
DJ jets for 1100/1150 are 132/138 i believe.

sorry.. im in the US, Oklahoma specifically. Maybe these r not stock carbs?? I was reading a tread on an 850 carb mod and got curious...its a 82 gs1100gl shaft, synced carbs and it ran really good for a little bit and noww spittin and sputtinerin with small flat spot in throttle so just wanted to take a look...it has pods and after market header 4 to 1. should I open the main a little?? or raise the needle 1 slot

Those are Canada or Euro spec stock Mikuni Needles...

118 would be a DJ size.. larger of the stage 1 or 2 kit.. for an 1100/1150 and probably small size stage one for an 8valve motor (they used bigger mains than the 16v bikes even stock because the head flow wasnt as good ;) ) If those were stock mikuni jets, they'd be in half sizes by 2.5 IE, 110, 112.5, 115, 117.5...118 is not a stock mikuni size..

OK, I guess the other possibility is that the A and E are only working occasionally on your keyboard.

Not all of us use all the texting lingo and shortcuts. While it saves YOU the time it takes to punch two keystrokes, it takes some of us a lot longer to figure out was was meant. If you are using a "Smart phone" for your posting, I'm sorry about your predicament, but it's just so much easier to read if the entire word is there. :o
(rant over, I'll get off my soapbox now)

By the way, the stock main jets for the 1100GL are 115. Since you have pods and a pipe, you should be running something in the range of 130 or so. That's a Mikuni 130, the DynoJet equivalent would be 138. Since you are running a jet that is smaller than stock, I would park the bike until you can fix that situation. The stock setting for the needle clip is probably the third groove from the top. You might need to lower the clip to the fourth or fifth groove to raise the needle a bit, but doing plug chops on a fresh set of plugs will be the authority on what you need to adjust.

.

Sorry guys and gals I text a lot  so I put the clip in the fourth from top, was in third, gonna test it... 118 is a long way from 138, y does this thing pull so hard in the upper rpm range, I would think that it would run like crap with that small a jet?? or is that jet for lower rpm range...just to be clear the jet I am talking about is the one you see when you take the bowl off. Just sticking out there.

138 is more for the 1150..

Ok, the only thing I did was move the needle up 1 slot and kind of clean them up a bit and now the spitting and sputtering is at 3000 rpm and no other. If i try and stay at 45 in 5th gear which is right at 3000 it jumps then slows cuts out and sounds like crap, but sounds good above and below 3000. Any ideas?? I'm gonna try to get some jets today, I have drill bits that I can use to make them any size I want but would like to have an extra set in case I screw up.

If you use drill bits, any further suggestions from the forum will likely cease, except for the ones who will suggest taking out the damaged jets.

early DJ kits had larger mains and blunt needles.
i'm pretty sure he has an early dynojet kit in his carbs.
he is in the US not the UK as far as factory adjustable needles are concerned.

The DJ needles for the eight valve motors are blunt compared to the sixteen valve.
The 170 DJ main is only used with an air corrector in the main air jet. That changes everything for the main jet mixture.

It doesn't matter where you put the clip on the needle with a main jet that small. Get that dialed in first and then work on the needle jet.
Is there a brass jet where the main air jet is on your carbs? This is located on the filter side of the carbs around five oclock?

Hey Terry
Where early DJ needles blunt?

bill,
it just seems like at times a person asks questions and then talks about everything else but the answer they was given.
i have used DJ kits sense the late 80's..
they have changed and gotten better.
i have some old stock kits still.
do you want to thumb wrestle?
