    All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

    A Special Note about Email accounts!
    DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Is there a way to know if a bike is an '82 or '83 GS1100 by VIN?

Thanks

If its an 83 it will say GS1100ED or ESD If its an 82 it will say GS1100EZ. Also the 82 and 83 frames are a bit different from eachother. The biggest and quickest give away are the foot pegs. The 82 used the widely used blocky footpeg while the 83 has pegs that are tappered and only have rubber pads on top of aluminim rests, like the 83 and on 700/750.

Things that may have been changed out but.......
engine color, polished on 82 ,black on 83
wheels,
speedo, only 85mph on 82.

U can change almost anything. We've seen many people with 82's swap speedos, and wheels and even engines. Much of it is interchangeable , but the most definite and unmistakable discriminator as Josh said is the foot pegs as the frames differ in the welded mounts.

So while you can probably get an idea relative to VIN, I would look at the mounts first and if for no other reason would look at VIN as an idle curiosity.

By the way, we are talking EZ v.s. ED/ESD differences. Not E and ES differences.

Well maybe someone will come along with an answer you will like :-s

Re-Do

82 - 10th digit X
83 - 10th digit D

So something like

JS1 G U 7 4 A 0 X 000000
JS1 G U 7 4 A 0 D 000000

JS1 = Japan Suzuki 1= motorcycle A= ATV
G = GS/GSX D= DR/DS/RS/DRZ S= SP/TS/DRZ-S ect...
U = 1100cc N = 500/600cc P = 650/700cc R = 750cc ect...
7 = 4 stroke 4 cylinder 1 = 2stroke single 2= 4stroke single 5 = 4stroke twin ect...
4 = Design sequence
A = Normal G = Shaft T= turbo ect
X or 0-9 = some random coding digit for data processing
X = 82 D = 83
000000 Unit number

I hope that helps
