A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've read somewhere on this site that 83's have a higher gear ratio than 82's due to thier final drive. Does anyone know how much higher it is? I see a few from 82's on ebay and was wandering if it was really noticeable, or if I should hold out till I come across a 83.

The gearing inside the transmission for 5th gear is a wee bit different in some GS850GL models vs. their GS850G brothers. I don't remember which, but you're welcome to peruse the fiches and compare part numbers until your eyeballs bleed if you'd like to know. I don't know if there were any G/GL internal gearing changes on the 1000 and 1100 shafties.

The gearing in the final drive (the rear "pumpkin") is the same for all the 850+ shafties except it was a little taller in the GK model. (The GS1100GK was the full dress tourer, and is quite rare.)

So a few people have transplanted GK final drives onto their more pedestrian shafties (simple bolt-on), and report a roughly 4% drop in rpms at speed. Exactly why this is considered desirable or worth the trouble, I don't really understand.

From what I have heard it changes the RPM about 300 It is 3.09 vs 2.91 or something close. The big difference between the 850 and the 1000/1100 is the secondary gear set is different (higher) they are not interchangable

Fuel economy? Frankly I dunno that Id like it on my 1100G. It suits the GK, as its a long range road tourer. My G, i want to have pleanty of balls. Big balls. But, I'll soon be able to compare the two :)
