83' GS1000g engine swap into a 1980 gs1000g

Hi I have gone through the threads and can't find an answer on whether I can bolt a 1983 gs1100g motor into a 1980 gs1000g frame.
Seems like I should be able to.
Is there any modifications necessary?

Hi,

I don't have any direct experience with your situation. But with a motor change such as this you usually have to take the drive line parts with you too. Keep the 1100 driveshaft and associated parts with the engine when you install it in the 1000 frame.

I know that some parts, like rear footpeg mounts were different between the two frames, I don't know about motor mounts. :-k

If I remember correctly, he has gone the other way installing an '83 1100 into an '80 frame.

I meant a 83 gs1100 motor not a 1000cc my mistake.

I bet it's a direct swap. That would be sqdancerlynn's territory.
I put an 83 CHAIN DRIVE 1100 E motor into an 80 CHAIN DRIVE 1100 L frame.

it IS a direct swap at least as long as the engine mounts go.

83 has a different secondary gear output plate that connects to the shaft drive so either use the shaft of the 83 (easiest) or swap the secondary gears (on the 83) for the 80 and use the existing shaft

you will need to re-wire the 80 to work with the ignition system of the 83 engine. or swap the parts from the crank end.

As they have said , it's an easy swap. Use all of the 80 ign parts will make it easier. An afternoon's work. Make sure to soak the ex studs with PB blaster or something simillar Keep the secondary gear set from the old motor for a spare

with the carbs off the 1100 it's aprox a 20HP gain but the feel of the power also depends on the gearing you use. "nessism" has a useful chart of various gear ratios (secondary and final) used on the gs's that can give you an idea of what you'll end up with.
