83 GS1100GK charging problem... R/R I think?

I have always felt that the charging system did not work properly. At the end of last summer I put in a new battery and kept it on a trickle charger all the time. If I ride the bike for a couple of hours and do some starting and stopping of the motor it seemed like the battery wasn?t staying charged. It wasn?t that big of a problem because I would put it on the trickle charger each night.
I added a pair of driving lights to my bike so I might be seen easier (to many cars pulling out in front of me). My wife and I rode about 2 hours to the lake and spent the day. We started back home and about 20 minutes from home I had to stop at a stop light and the bike died while I was slowing down with the clutch disengaged. I popped the clutch and the bike started back up. I noticed that the head lights were getting dimmer before this happened. I turned off the driving lights and kept the rpms up until I got home.
I think the R/R is bad. I went thru the Stator fault finding chart and here are my findings.
My tach is broken and I guessed at the rpms when instructed to use a set rpm.
Test A: Less than 13 volts, and I could not get a steady reading when connecting to the R/R but it was always a negative number.
Test B: 0.8 in first test, no reading in second test, and between 87 and 91 volts in the last test (guessing at the rpms).
Test C: Red to Positve on R/R and black to the yellows, all read 1. Black to positive and red to the yellows: one read 582, second was 1, and third was 578. I got similar results on the reverse test.
Could someone please confirm that my R/R is most likely the problem? I don?t have a lot of money to spend and I want to try and fix it the first time. If it is the R/R, what is the least expensive way to fix it?
Thanks

Did you check the R/R ground? It's recommended to run the ground over to the battery. Try that and check your voltage again. If the R/R is toast, you might want to look for a Honda R/R off ebay or look up GSR member Duaneage, he sells Honda R/R's for reasonable prices. Failing all that, I have an almost new Suzuki R/R from my 850 that should be a direct plug in on your bike (I think). Drop me a PM if you want to discuss...

I connected a ground wire and the voltage went up to 13.3 volts. Close but not 13.5. Any other suggestions? that one helped.
Thanks

Were you reving up the engine and only got 13.5 volts? Could be resistance in the stator wires where they connect to the main harness - don't be surprised if you find melted connectors.

The engine was at a high rpm(no tach) and the voltage made it to 13.3. I have went thru the stator fault check and all connectors were clean and in good working order and the resistance in the stator was within the limits in the chart at 0.8.

Was that 87 - 91 volts on all three legs of the stator? If so, sounds like you need a new R/R.

Do you have the red wire from the RR connected directly to the + side of the battery thru a fuse ? You could be loosing voltage in the old wiring.

The voltage on each leg was between 87 and 91. If my tach worked I may have gotten a more consistent reading.
I do not have a wire between the positive and the red wire on the R/R. I have been reading other post about connecting them and that it could cause a slow drain on the battery. Maybe I am reading them wrong. I was reading about putting a honda r/r on the bike.
Thanks for your replies
