A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

85 GS550 EF: oil filter cover retention bolts

The only thing keeping me off my GS is probably a 2$ part. Someone help. There are three bolts that protrude from the engine block. Over these fits the oil filter cap. This is then held in place by three nuts which screw onto the bolts. One of these nuts is stripped, with the consequence that I cannot tighten the cover enough and a slow, steady drip of oil escapes from this loose cover (about 1 quart for 20 mins riding). Anyone ever face a similar problem? I can't get the nut off, and if the threading is wrecked, will have to replace the bolt too. It's a real pain because on of the exhaust pipes is in the way, making it hard to get good leverage.

Anyone got any ideas?

Other than cutting the nut off, I have had luck putting Vise-grips on the nut and pulling real hard while turning it off, and sometimes it will grab enough to come off. You may have to remove the header pipe to gain access for it, but 1 quart ever 20 min is no small leak!

To get the nut off try getting a little flat head screw driver and put some upward pressure on the nut as you unscrew it. Once off, if it's just the nut, got to the hardware store and replace it. If it's the stud, you may be able to rethread it with a tap and die set. You may also be able to just use a washer to get the nut above the stripped threads.

Careful pulling the headers off, when I did mine I broke off 3 bolts  , turning a small problem into a huge pain in the A$$
