  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

86' GS 550L, WHERE TO FIND SMALLER REAR GEAR?

Hi, I have an 86' GS 550L with a 47 tooth 530 sprocket on the rear and was wondering if there was an aftermarket sprocket a little smaller in size? I bought the bike about 3 months ago being told all it needs is a new tank because the original had big holes in it. Well for $700.00 and only 6,121 miles on it and my wife knowing the guy from school, I thought it sounded like a good deal. Well I brought it home and cleaned the carbs 5 or 6 times and 3&4 cylinders were always running rich so after going to different forums I was convinced the carbs were bad and they were. My one diagphram had a 1/4" slit in it! So it was either $108.00 for a new diagphram or buy these professionally cleaned carbs on Ebay for $125.00, so I bought them and it runs great except I think at 40 mph it shouldnt be running at 4-4,500 rpm's or maybe I'm wrong. It seems to be whinning at that rpm or maybe it really isnt broken in yet??? I'm just looking for maybe a 45 or 44 tooth sprocket as I'm the only one that will really be riding it because my wife only likes to go on short trips, like to the store and back (5 min. away)! Thanks for the info. I went to DK and they have 38,42,43,45 and 46 tooth sprockets but now I dont know how much smaller I should go??? Right now it has the stock 47 tooth on it. Any ideas as to what size I should drop to? Thanks ALOT! Jake
 
Here is what I would do. Count the teeth on the front/countershaft sprocket and go up a tooth. I think 16 is the max available.

I run 16/48 on my bike. It is NOT a drag racer, it's a touring bike. I don't have to abuse the clutch to get the bike moving, but at 70/75 indicated it's moving along at a nice engine speed. (The tach is worn out and does not give accurate readings on my bike. If I don't like what it sez all I have to do is whack it one and it will probabaly indicate better!)
 
You can gear it up quite a bit if you like. The sprockets for all mag wheel 550's are the same. I think the earlier ones used more teeth than the later ones though.

Now, the later 550 likes to wind up. Mine is doing around 6000 at 75 mph, it has sat at that RPM for almost a full tank of fuel and never hiccuped once. They are soft in the HP department until the revs are up. If you lower the revs on the highway that much, your around town will be a little harder (more sluggish off the line, less gears to walk around town with), and you will have to punch down to pass, climb etc.

You will still have to loosen the rear wheel and the chain adjusters to get some free play in the chain. Sometime an air impact wrench is necessary to loosen sprocket nut.

I heard alot about the 15 tooth sprocket not being recommended, so should I go to the 16 tooth? I'm not looking for speed off the line, just something to keep my rpm's a little lower at higher speeds like 65-75mph!! I'm sure you all read my first post and like a dummy, I was lied to and took the bait as the guy will not answer the phone or reply to my messages and I'm not ignorant about it, I just want to know what all was done to the bike. I bought an oil cooler for it and was told it will take from oil getting to the cylinders, is that true or should I post another subject? Thanks ALOT! You guys know your stuff and I hope to get this thing going by next weekend! Thanks Again! Jake

I would not do the double jump. Go with the 15. You've got to remember. You can probably get by jumping up a tooth but go two and your chain might be too short! 8O !!

Start a new thread about the oil cooler. Somebody is giving you some wrong info. :x

If I were to put a 15 tooth sprocket on the front, is it true that it will only lower my rpm's 500? Most people I've talked to, not specifically my bike, say that at 55 mph they are running around 2500 rpm's and that 6,000 rpm's is running way too high??? I dont know myself and hope someone has the same bike and can tell me if this is the way its suppose to be?? Thanks! Jake
 
What kind of tractor engine is in that bike to turn 2500 at 55? 8O
My 750 turns around 5000 at 65.
The yamaha turns about 6000.
I don't know about huge v-twins they might turn 2500.
Sprokets don't cost a lot, try a 15 front, if you still want to drop the rpms more, buy a 16.

Hi, Sorry for the late response but yes the bike is a v-twin, Yamaha V-Star. I did buy a 15 tooth front sprocket, just waiting for it to get here. Some of the guys I work with tell me that my rpm's are normal so maybe it is just me. I will post when I get it and put it on! Thanks! Jake
