New owner of a 1986 gs550es bike came with a extra vance & hines 4 into 1 exhaust, looking to dump the OE airbox, can't seem to find a pair of oval filter pods for these odd-ball siamese carbs, anybody make them for this bike? also looking for jetting suggestions: current set up appears to be stock: 97.5 mains and 42.5 pilots.

1st suzuki in my garage in many years.

Hi Race,
You don't say where you are but I'm guessing the US mabye try Hahn racecraft maybe they can help?,as for the jetting go rich young man go rich! a mate of mine has a GS650 with pods and loud exhaust and he is using 125 main jets. Try to start really big like 130 and work down all a rich mixture will do is make the engine bog down when you open the throttle hard whereas a lean mix will mean you will have the sparkplugs shooting past your ears as the engine grenades then it's paperweight time. I put a GSX1100 engine into my GS1000 chassis and had to use pods after 6 sets of jets I finally got it to run really well( I started with 145 main jets and went down to 117.5-standard is 110 for my model) a good tip for removal is find a flat blade screwdriver and coat the end with rubber soloution for glueing patches onto cycle tubes that way you won't damage the soft brass main jets and you can make an arrangement with your supplier to send you jets sale or return until you find a working setup. Good luck Johnny

you better see if a st.3 jet kit is still available.
i know the filters you need are not available from K&N anymore.

Here in the US mate, considering the hassle it is to even remove the stock airbox, sure would be nice to replace it with a couple of pods. I have all the jets out and cleaned, not looking to spend $$ on jet kit, unless necessary of course.

Also, can anybody tell me what the valve clearances are suppose to be? no owners/service manual - yet.

Thanks

on US models it is 100% necessary for the bike to run properly without the air box.
if your not removing all the air box then maybe a re-jet will work.

Jet kit for that bike shows up on DJ website:

Unless you like being continuously frustrated, I would recommend it for pods and pipe.
Did you get new o-rings for the carbs?
http://www.cycleorings.com/

Unless I can find a pair of air filter pods (no luck so far) I will be staying with the OE airbox, but going to install the Vance & Hines 4 into one regardless.

Previous owner receipts shows carbs were rebuilt in 2007, I have them apart right now, 2 of the pilots may have been partially plugged. It had fresh gas in the bowls and spark at the plugs, but would not fire. No leaks so questioning the need for the 0-rings?

This appears to be a replacement for the stock filter - using OE airbox. apparently the individual filters are no longer available for these odd ball siamese carb. Guess I will keep the airbox and just jet for the header.

I do see from the service manual, that outer and inner carbs use different main jets, mine has 97.5 mains and 42.5 pilots in all 4?

Suzuki would often put larger mains in the inner carbs because they run hotter.

You can "make" a set of 52mm pod filters work with a little effort.

I'd be curious to know too if the Stage 3 jet kit is still available for my 85.
